I bought this laptop in Nov 2023. Motherboard corrupted in Sep 2024 without warning. It was in warranty and it was a huge hassle to get motherboard replaced. Motherboard was replaced and since then batter life was like an hour. Three days ago, on 14th Feb 2026, laptop again starting same symptoms. Black screen with 5 long blinks and 3 short caps-lock blink.

Its a pathetic product and when I read reviews, it seems HP deliberately is selling these substandard products with life span of less than 3 yrs. It seems motherboard problem again. But I ask anyone from here if they had the same problem? If yes, how did you solve it?

Hi @ALKoul,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Could you confirm the exact model of your laptop?
  • When the black screen occurs, does the system power on (fans spinning, lights on), or is it completely unresponsive?
  • Have you noticed if the issue happens only when on battery, or also when plugged into AC power?
  • Did the battery life issue start immediately after the motherboard replacement, or gradually worsen?

Troubleshooting steps to try

  1. Hard Reset
    • Disconnect the power adapter.
    • Hold down the power button for 15–20 seconds.
    • Reconnect power and try to start the laptop.
  2. Check Blink Codes
    • The 5 long and 3 short caps-lock blinks usually indicate a hardware failure (often related to the system board or BIOS).
    • If possible, note whether the blink pattern is consistent every time you power on.
  3. External Display Test
    • Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI/DisplayPort.
    • This helps confirm if the issue is with the display panel or the motherboard.
  4. Battery/Power Adapter Check
    • Try starting the laptop with the battery removed and only the AC adapter connected.
    • If it powers on normally, the battery may be contributing to the issue.
  5. BIOS Recovery
  • On some HP models, pressing Windows key + B while holding the power button can trigger a BIOS recovery.
  • If the blink code relates to BIOS corruption, this may help.

I hope this helps.

This is shameful that you are giving me these generic responses.

I bought laptop in Nov 2023. In SEP 2024, same problem and I was told to ship it back and you will fix it. Since it was in warranty, you guys fixed it reluctantly (I didn't paid anything). Now In Feb 2026, this thing happened again. I got it diagnosed and paid $140 and got to know there is some serious issue with motherboard.

SHAME on HP for proving junk to its customers. Paid $700 for this laptop and on top of that $140 for diagnose.

When I see reviews of this product, HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 15-fh0023dx Series, I came to know it is a known issue that motherboard gets corrupted.
You are conning customer here by providing junk.

Thanks for your response and I’m truly sorry to hear about the repeated issues you’ve faced with your HP Envy x360 2‑in‑1 Laptop. I completely understand your concern, only to encounter the same serious problem more than once, and then have to pay out of pocket for a diagnosis after already going through a warranty repair earlier.
