Hi, I have an HP Victus laptop and while playing heavy games like Cyberpunk 2077, the screen randomly turns off and on, the lights randomly turning on and off— just like when the lid is closed, even though it stays open.
It feels like the lid sensor is being triggered by mistake.
I’ve already checked the power settings and updated all drivers, but the issue persists.
Any help or idea? Could it be a faulty sensor?

Hi @meyz,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for reaching out — and yes, based on what you’ve described, you’re most likely right: this sounds like a faulty or overly sensitive lid sensor (also known as a hall effect sensor or magnetic reed switch), especially since the screen and lights behave as though the lid is closing, even though it remains open.
1. Disable Lid Close Action Temporarily
This won’t fix the sensor, but it can prevent the screen from turning off:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Click Choose what closing the lid does.
- Set When I close the lid, to do nothing for both battery and plugged in.
- Save changes.
⚠️ This won’t stop the flickering, but it may prevent the system from sleeping or turning off the display.
2. Check for BIOS Update
Check and report improvement after updating the BIOS:
- Visit HP’s support page: Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-s0000 (76T50AV) Software and Driver Details
- Download and install the latest BIOS and firmware updates.
3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
To test the lid sensor:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Run the Component Tests > Input Devices > Lid Switch Test (if available).
If the test fails or behaves erratically, it confirms a hardware issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
