Yesterday, I had been scanning to a flash drive and copying to my files when suddenly the D drive selection was no longer showing on my dropdown choices to copy from.

Hi @Greenduke2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your D drive (likely a secondary partition or an external drive) is no longer being detected by your HP Pavilion x360. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and possibly recover access.

Check If the Drive is Still Recognized

  • Open File Explorer (Win + E) and see if the D drive is listed under "This PC."
  • If it's missing, continue with the next steps.

Check in Disk Management

  1. Press Win + X and select Disk Management.
  2. Look for the D drive in the list.
    • If it appears without a drive letter, right-click and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add.
    • If it shows as Unallocated, it may have lost its partition.
    • If it's not listed at all, check connections (if it's an external drive) and proceed to step 3.

Run Hardware Troubleshooter

  • Open Command Prompt as Admin (Win + X > Command Prompt (Admin))
  • Run: msdt.exe /id DeviceDiagnostic
  • This will open the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to check for missing drives.

Check for Drive Letter Conflicts

  • Sometimes, the drive letter may be reassigned or hidden.
  • Go to Disk Management, right-click the missing D drive (if found), and assign a new letter.

Check for Corruption via Command Prompt

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin) and type: chkdsk 😧 /f
  • If the drive is still accessible but has issues, this will attempt to repair it.

Check Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  • Expand Disk Drives and check if your D drive is listed.
  • If there's a yellow warning icon, right-click > Update Driver.
  • You can also try Uninstall Device and restart your PC.

Try Restarting Your PC or Using Safe Mode

  • A simple restart might make the drive reappear.
  • If not, try booting into Safe Mode (Shift + Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart > Press F4).

System Restore (If Issue Started Recently)

If the issue started suddenly after an update or software change:

  • Search for Create a restore point > Open System Restore and choose a point before the issue began.

Check If It's a Hardware Issue

  • If the D drive is an external USB drive, try plugging it into another port or another computer.
  • If it’s an internal partition, boot into the BIOS (F2 or F10 on startup) and see if it's detected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
