@TomP0317, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Got it — that sounds super frustrating, especially since your laptop is less than a year old. Let’s try to get it back up and running. I’ll walk you through a few steps to figure out what’s going on.

First, a couple of quick questions:

What’s the exact model of your HP laptop (or as close as you can get)?

When it went black, were you using it, or did it go black after restarting or updating?

Do you see any lights on the laptop when you press the power button? (Like the caps lock key light, power light, keyboard backlight, etc.)

Do you hear any fan noise or beeps when trying to turn it on?

In the meantime, try this reset (called a hard reset😞

For laptops with a removable battery:

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds.
  • Reinsert the battery, plug in the charger, and try turning it on.

For laptops with a non-removable battery:

  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30–60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the charger and try to power it on.

If the screen is still black:

  • Try shining a flashlight at an angle on the screen after powering on — if you can faintly see the HP logo or login screen, it might be a backlight issue.
  • Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI — this helps check if the display is the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The exact model is HP Laptop 17t-cn300 CTO2. SN#[edited]ProdID 767L0AV. I was using the laptop at the time and it went blank, no lights, and I did not notice the fan noise. I was told by the guy working at Best Buy that my model doesn’t have a battery that is removable.

Hi @TomP0317,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check the power source:

  • Ensure the power adapter is connected:
    • Make sure the power adapter is securely connected to the laptop and to the power outlet.
    • Check if the power indicator light on the adapter is on.
  • Test the power outlet:
    • Try plugging the adapter into a different power outlet to confirm the outlet is functioning properly.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all external devices:
    • Unplug any external devices connected to the laptop, such as USB drives, printers, or external monitors.
  • Remove the battery:
    • If your laptop has a removable battery, disconnect it.
  • Hold down the power button:
    • Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter:
    • Reinstall the battery if removable, and connect the power adapter.

Check for LED or Beep Codes:

  • Observe any LED lights:
    • Look for any LED lights or beep codes that may indicate a hardware issue.
    • Refer to your laptop's manual or HP support to interpret these codes.

Try Booting in Safe Mode:

  • Power on the laptop:
    • Try powering on the laptop while repeatedly pressing the F8 key to enter Safe Mode.
  • Select Safe Mode:
    • If successful, select Safe Mode and see if the laptop boots up.

Reset BIOS/CMOS:

  • Access the BIOS settings:
    • Power on the laptop and press the F10 key repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Load default settings:
    • In the BIOS menu, load the default settings and save changes.

I hope this helps.
