Laptop doesn't charge while system is powered on and adaptor is connected. It only charges when the system is powered off.
Checked in the bulletin that this occurs due to EC switching to incompatibility mode.
Any solution for this.

@Eregore, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're experiencing where your OMEN 16 only charges when powered off. It typically occurs when the adapter barrel connector is not inserted properly, which can trigger the Embedded Controller (EC) to switch into "Incompatible Mode". This protective mode prevents charging while the system is powered on.
Resolution Steps:
To resolve this, please follow these steps carefully:
Inspect the Adapter and DC Jack:
- Ensure there is no visible damage or debris inside the adapter barrel or the laptop’s DC jack.
Reconnect the Adapter Properly:
- Insert the adapter barrel smoothly and fully into the DC jack in one continuous motion.
- Avoid pausing or wiggling during insertion, as this can trigger the EC protection.
Verify Charging:
- Once connected, check for:
- On-screen charging notification
- Audible chime
- Battery icon update in the Windows taskbar (Power & Battery menu)
Check Power Source:
- Ensure the wall socket or power strip is functioning correctly.
You can find the full HP support bulletin with detailed guidance here: OMEN and Victus by HP Gaming Laptop PCs - Computer Will Only Charge When Powered Off | HP® Support
If the issue persists even after following these steps, I recommend:
- Trying a different compatible HP adapter.
- Performing a BIOS update via HP Support Assistant.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
