HP OmniBook X Flip 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop Next Gen AI PC 16-as0000 (AK4B1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

The OmniBook X Flip that I purchased new a month ago does not support Dual Monitor display. I have purchased and returned the HP G USB-C docking station and then a more expensive Thunderbolt dock and neither worked. After speaking to HP support t(twice) they stated that they are getting a lot of calls on this and that I will likely need a commercial laptop. I like the Omnibook and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions

Hi @Doodledog2020,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand why you’re disappointed, especially after buying docks that should work and being told the laptop “likely needs a commercial device” for dual displays. Let’s break this down clearly and help you understand what’s going on and what options you do have.

Why Dual Monitor Isn’t Working

  • The OmniBook X Flip uses Intel integrated graphics and a single USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, but not MST (Multi-Stream Transport).
  • MST is required for daisy-chaining or driving two external monitors from one USB-C port.
  • Consumer laptops like OmniBook often support only one external display per USB-C port, even with Thunderbolt docks.

What Are Your Options?

  1. Use HDMI + USB-C Together
    • The OmniBook X Flip has an HDMI port (check your model specs).
    • Connect one monitor via HDMI and the other via USB-C (through a dock or direct cable).
    • This usually works for dual external displays.

  2. Check GPU Specs
    • If your model has an Intel Arc or NVIDIA GPU, it may support multiple displays via different ports.
    • Integrated-only models are limited to one display per port.

  3. Use a DisplayLink Dock
    • Standard docks rely on GPU output, but DisplayLink docks use USB graphics technology.
    • They allow multiple monitors, even on systems without MST.
    • Popular options: Plugable, Targus, Kensington DisplayLink docks.

  4. Commercial/Business Laptops
    • HP EliteBook or ZBook series support MST and multiple monitors natively.
    • HP support suggesting a commercial laptop is correct if you need hardware-level multi-monitor support without DisplayLink.

Why HP G Dock & Thunderbolt Dock Didn’t Work

  • Those docks depend on MST or multiple DP lanes.
  • If the laptop’s USB-C port only supports one display stream, the dock can’t override that.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Unfortunately, this didn't work as my monitors have display ports/cables vs. traditional HDMI. But I appreciate the suggestions and I did download the Intel Graphics driver anyway.
