Hi @McQ4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This is a very practical concern, and you’re not alone. HP pens use magnetic attachment, but polarity mismatches can make it impossible to stick to certain Envy models. Here’s what you need to know:

Why This Happens

  • HP pens have a built-in magnet designed to attach to the side of compatible laptops.
  • Some HP Envy models have magnets oriented for lid closure sensors, not pen storage.
  • If the polarity is opposite, the pen will repel instead of attach.

Official HP Position

  • HP does not provide a way to change magnet polarity or reposition internal magnets.
  • Magnetic attachment is model-specific; not all Envy laptops are designed for pen docking.

Practical Solutions

  1. Use HP Pen Holder Accessories
  2. Attach Using a Magnetic Strip
    • A thin adhesive magnetic strip (with correct polarity) can be added to the laptop edge.
    • Available from office supply stores or online.

  3. Protective Case with Pen Slot
    • Many third-party cases for HP Envy include a pen holder.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
