Beyond some basic built-in security to prevent piracy of various types, the printer is unaware of what it is printing, scanning, or copying.

Perhaps you are running a supported version of Windows --

Printing from within Word requires the full driver printer software to have been installed.

Having installed the full driver generally provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences, plus support for printing (and scanning) from applications, software, and browsers.

Downloaded documents that are saved in PDF (.pdf) or Image file format, for example, .png or .jpg) can generally be printed with an installed application or software appropriate for the file type.

Examples - PDF Format -- Applications

  • Adobe Reader
  • HP Smart / HP App (Windows)
  • Browsers that support website printing of content

Downloaded documents in PDF format should generally print -- there are some prerequisites and limitations.

Examples --

  • The "Printer" must be selected in the print app / software -- failing to select the (correct) printer / print driver might result in odd errors, failure to print at all, balking, slow printing.
  • Printer Properties > Advanced > Driver should be set to the installed HP driver and not an IPP / Microsoft driver option.   See
  •  Printer_Properties_Advanced_Driver_4Printer_Properties_Advanced_Driver_4
  • The file must be saved in a readable, standard, PDF format.  There is no "workaround" -- Corrupted files do not print.
  • The file must not include non-printable objects that cannot be translated into printer language.   PDF documents that include content that cannot be translated might "Print as an Image".  Adobe Reader, for example, includes a "Print the PDF file as an image" setting for documents that might not otherwise print.
  • The file must not be protected against printing -- security of this type can be built into the document and cannot generally be removed by any casual methods.  Some insurance companies, for example, might prevent completed forms to be printed.

General Example - Adobe Reader - PDF format - main menu / Properties
