Hello,

I recently was given an old HP Pro Desk 400 G6 computer that has a I5 9500 installed in it. I would like to up date the CPU to a I7-9700 series CPU. Is this possible on the motherboard and if so what variant if the I7 9700 CPU is recommended? I am trying to make this old office PC a retro gaming platform for my Autistic daughter.

@SLM67,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Question: do you have the HP ProDesk 400 G6 SFF or the HP ProDesk 400 G6 MT?

Yes, I would go with an i7-9700 or i7-9700F (the "F" processor, though less expensive to purchase via an eBay Seller, requires a graphics card).

What "retro gaming" do you have in mind, as most retro games benefit from playing through a graphics card.

We need to discuss what your options are depending what model PC you got and the wattage of your PC's power supply.

Kind Regards,
