OMEN 35L Gaming Desktop PC GT16-0000i (9X6A4AV)

Since a week or two my Omen suddenly give a black screen and the fans start blowing rapidly.  All I can do is a hard reboot.  It happens randomy.  Not playing a game or anything else CPU consuming.  Just some browsing or checking mail.

There are no updates (BIOS, HP or windows) available.

This system is like 3 months old 😞

@GertSomething,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since you've already confirmed that there are no pending updates for BIOS, HP drivers, or Windows, let's go through some troubleshooting steps to diagnose and fix the issue:

1. Check Event Viewer for Errors

  • Open Event Viewer (Win + X > Event Viewer).
  • Go to Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application.
  • Look for critical errors or warnings around the time of the black screen crash.
  • If you see an error related to the GPU, power, or kernel crashes, take note of it.

2. Check Reliability Monitor

  • Type Reliability Monitor in Windows search and open it.
  • Look for red X marks or warnings around the time of the crash.

3. Monitor Temperatures

  • Install HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner and check CPU/GPU temps before a crash.
  • If the GPU or CPU is overheating, the system may be shutting down to protect itself.

4. Check Power Supply and Connections

  • A sudden black screen + fans ramping up can indicate a power issue.
  • Try reseating the power cables to the GPU and motherboard (24-pin, 8-pin, and PCIe power cables).
  • If possible, test with a different power supply unit (PSU).

5. Run a GPU Stress Test (FurMark or Heaven Benchmark)

  • If your GPU crashes immediately or overheats, it could be a GPU failure.
  • If possible, test with a different GPU.

6. Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).

7. Check RAM Stability

  • Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (mdsched.exe) to test for faulty RAM.
  • If possible, try reseating or testing with one RAM stick at a time.

8. Test Different GPU Drivers

  • Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely remove current drivers.
  • Reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers from the official website.
  • If the issue persists, try rolling back to an older stable driver.

9. Check for BIOS Settings / GPU Power Saving

  • Some BIOS power settings like ErP Mode, PCI Express Power Saving, or C-States can cause stability issues.
  • Try resetting BIOS to default settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

1. Nothing to see in eventviewer around the minute it happens

2. Nothing around that time

3. It sometimes happens only 2 minutes after browsing or reading mail so temperatures are ok.  Mac CPU temperaturs is in it 30's C° and GPU also

4. This is a brand new computer and I am not a technician so not going to open it and mess around with it.

5. Running Heaven Benchmark made it crash also but after rebooting it passed all tests.

6. Changed it.  No solution

7. Screen turns black after a few minutes and can't get it back on so I have to hard reboot.   Is there some logfile to be found?  Nothing to see in eventviewer.  As I said before, this is a brand new computer adn I am a noob so not going to fiddle with the components!

8. Updated the drivers from Nvidia yesterday.  No solution

9. How to enter the BIOS?  I have never changed anything in it so I assume the default settings are still there.

I installed my computer back to factory settings but it is still doing this and now my computer is in a loop and won't start no more.

Who can I contact using my cell phone to have this fixed? My first and last HP!
