The HP pens don't get good reviews at all and they are expensive. My needs are pretty basic, to browse the internet, and to convert hand written study notes to text. Do I need a fancy pen or will a basic stylus do the job?

Hi @Fitzy5,

I understand you’re using an HP Omnibook Flip and want to know whether you need an HP active pen or if a basic stylus will work. Let’s go through a few points to help you choose the right option.

Check if your Omnibook Flip supports an active pen
– Many Omnibook Flip models require Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) pens for handwriting features.
– If the screen only supports touch input, a basic capacitive stylus will be the only option.

Confirm whether you need Windows Ink functions
– Handwriting-to-text in apps like OneNote works best with an active pen.
– A basic stylus can tap and scroll but won’t give precise writing or palm-rejection.

Review how often you plan to take handwritten notes
– For light jotting or casual use, a simple capacitive stylus is usually enough.
– For clean note-taking, active pens provide better accuracy and a smoother ink flow.

Compare basic stylus vs. active pen performance
– Basic stylus: good for browsing, tapping, and occasional writing.
– Active pen: supports pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, and better handwriting recognition.

Consider lower-cost active pen alternatives
– Many third-party MPP pens work well and cost less than HP’s premium pens.
– These still provide better results for study notes and converting handwriting to text.

Test your apps’ sensitivity requirements
– Apps like OneNote and Whiteboard rely heavily on pen precision.
– If the writing appears jagged with a basic stylus, upgrading to an active pen will improve accuracy.

I hope this helps.
