When I connect my HP OmniBook 7 laptop to the mains a red light appears next to the power socket. When I disconnect the power lead from the laptop the red light disappears. What is the significance of the red light, please?

I understand your HP OmniBook 7 shows a red light next to the power connector when the charger is plugged in. Let’s go through what this usually indicates.

Battery charging status indication
On HP OmniBook models, a red or amber light near the power port typically means the battery is charging and is currently below a full charge level.
The light normally changes color or turns off once the battery reaches a higher charge state.

Low battery or critically low charge
A steady red or amber light can indicate the battery was at a low charge level when the adapter was connected.
Allow the laptop to remain connected to power for 30–60 minutes and observe if the light behavior changes.

Charging while powered off
If the laptop is turned off and plugged in, the red light may stay on to show that charging is in progress.
This is normal behavior and does not indicate a fault by itself.

Verify normal charging in Windows
Power on the laptop and check the battery icon in Windows to confirm the battery percentage is increasing.
If the percentage rises normally, the red light is functioning as a status indicator.

Check for abnormal behavior
If the red light blinks continuously, remains red even after several hours, or the battery percentage does not increase, this may indicate a battery or charger issue.
In that case, testing with another compatible HP charger can help rule out an adapter problem.

I hope this helps.
