@joy777777, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Spectre x360 Convertible (13-aw2000) fan is constantly running even after replacing the thermal paste it's likely caused by software, settings, or underlying hardware inefficiencies rather than just thermal issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to identify and mitigate the problem:

Check for Background Activity

Use Task Manager

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look for high CPU, Memory, or Disk usage.
  • Apps like Microsoft Edge, OneDrive, Antivirus software, or Windows Update can trigger fan activity.

Fix: Disable or uninstall unnecessary startup apps from the Startup tab.

BIOS and Driver Updates

Outdated BIOS or drivers can prevent proper fan control.

  1. Go to the HP Support Page.
  2. Download and install the latest:
  • BIOS update
  • Chipset drivers
  • Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology
  • Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI)

Adjust Thermal Settings

HP laptops often come with HP Command Center:

  • Open HP Command Center → Go to Thermal Profile.
  • Set it to "Quiet" or "Cool" instead of "Performance"
If HP Command Center isn’t installed, you can get it from the Microsoft Store.

Clean Ventilation and Airflow

Even after thermal paste replacement:

  • Ensure vents are not blocked.
  • Use it on a hard, flat surface or cooling pad.

Disable Turbo Boost (Optional, for quiet operation)

Intel Turbo Boost increases CPU speed and heat.

How to Disable (Windows 11):

  1. Open Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings.
  2. Under Processor power management, set:
  • Maximum processor state to 99% (disables Turbo Boost).

Check for Malware or Corrupt Processes

Run a full scan with Windows Defender or a trusted tool like Malwarebytes.

Optional Diagnostics

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press Esc repeatedly at boot → press F2 for diagnostics.
  • Run the Fan test and Thermal test

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried all of your recommendations, but my computer is still overheating and the fan still comes on. All tests were passed. What else do you recommend?
