Hi @tf59

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry to hear that half of the keys on your keyboard aren’t responding. I know how frustrating it feels when something so essential suddenly stops working, and I appreciate any steps you may have already tried to get it back in shape.

Let’s walk through a set of clear checks and actions together to bring those keys back to life:

Step 1: Basic checks

  • Gently press the non-working keys a few times to ensure they aren’t physically stuck or obstructed by dust or debris.
  • If you’re using a detachable or external keyboard, disconnect and reconnect it firmly.

Step 2: Restart and test

  • Restart the computer once to refresh the hardware connection.
  • After restart, test the keyboard in different applications (Notepad, Word, browser search bar) to confirm if the issue is consistent.

Step 3: Keyboard driver refresh

  1. Press Windows + X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards.
  3. Right-click your keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart the computer—Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.

Step 4: Run built-in diagnostics

  • Open the HP App on your PC.
  • Go to Support > Device Diagnostics.
  • Select Keyboard Test and follow the on-screen instructions to check each key. This will confirm whether the issue is hardware or software related.

Step 5: Check language and input settings

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Time & Language > Language & Region.
  • Ensure the correct keyboard layout (e.g., US QWERTY) is selected.

Step 6: External keyboard test

  • If available, connect an external USB keyboard. If all keys work there, the issue is isolated to the built-in keyboard.

By moving through these steps, we’ll narrow down whether the problem is caused by software, settings, or the hardware itself. I admire your patience in troubleshooting—each step brings us closer to clarity.
