Hi @RevMPRA,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're seeing a heavy black line on prints from your HP LaserJet printer, it may be due to toner buildup, a dirty drum, or issues with the toner cartridge. Here's a DIY guide to help you address it.

Materials Needed:

  • Soft, lint-free cloths
  • Isopropyl alcohol (optional)
  • Compressed air (optional)
  • New toner cartridge (if necessary)
  • Gloves (optional)

Steps to Remove the Black Line:

  • Turn off the Printer: Power down your printer and unplug it from the power source to ensure safety while you work on it.
  • Open the Printer: Open the printer's front or top cover, depending on your model, to access the toner cartridge and drum unit.
  • Remove the Toner Cartridge: Carefully remove the toner cartridge from the printer. Be sure to handle it carefully, as toner can spill if the cartridge is shaken.
  • Check the Drum for Marks: The drum is usually the cause of black lines. Look for any visible toner buildup or scratches on the drum surface. If you find toner buildup, gently wipe it away using a soft, lint-free cloth. Be sure not to touch the drum surface with your fingers, as oils from your skin can cause damage.
  • Clean the Drum: If you suspect the drum is dirty, you can clean it with a cloth slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the drum gently without applying too much pressure. Allow the drum to dry completely before reassembling.
  • Inspect the Toner Cartridge: Sometimes, the toner cartridge itself can be the cause of the black line. Check for any visible issues, such as leaking toner or broken parts. If the cartridge is old or defective, it may need to be replaced.
  • Check for Obstructions or Damage: Inspect the inside of the printer for any pieces of paper or toner buildup that may be causing the line. Use compressed air to blow out any debris from the printer's interior.
  • Reassemble the Printer: Once you've cleaned the drum and checked the toner cartridge, reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit back into the printer. Close the printer cover.
  • Print a Test Page: Power on the printer and print a test page to check if the black line has been removed. If the line persists, you may need to replace the toner cartridge or drum unit, as these parts can wear out over time.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
