Hi @lemza

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry you’re experiencing uncontrolled keyboard typing and sound muting—it’s deeply frustrating when your device behaves erratically and interrupts your ability to work or communicate. You’ve done everything right by observing the symptoms and reaching out.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help stabilize your keyboard and audio.

Step-by-step actions to fix erratic keyboard input and sound mute

1. Perform a full embedded controller reset

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the charger and any peripherals.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger only (leave battery disconnected if removable).
  5. Power on the laptop and wait for it to fully boot.

This clears low-level power states and may restore keyboard and audio controller behavior.

2. Check for stuck keys or external interference

  • Gently clean the keyboard with a soft cloth.
  • Ensure no keys are physically stuck or pressed down.
  • Disconnect any external keyboard or USB device.

A stuck key or faulty peripheral can trigger repeated characters or mute commands.

3. Run HP UEFI diagnostics

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press Esc, then F2.
  3. Select Component Tests > Keyboard and Audio.
  4. Run both tests and note any error codes.

This checks for hardware faults in the keyboard matrix and audio controller.

4. Update keyboard and audio drivers

  • Visit: HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your exact laptop model.
  • Download and install:
    • Keyboard Driver (if listed)
    • Realtek or Intel Audio Driver
    • BIOS Update
  • Restart your laptop after installation.

Updated drivers ensure proper input handling and audio control.

5. Check Windows accessibility settings

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
  2. Turn off Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and Toggle Keys.
  3. Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  4. Confirm your output device is correct and volume is not muted.

These settings can interfere with normal typing and sound behavior.

Let me know how the system responds after these steps. If the issue persists, we can test with an external keyboard or clean boot.

You’ve done everything right by staying observant—I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.
