A couple weeks ago, I received a message on my less than 1 year old Omen desktop that said "user profile service failed to login." I was really concerned that when I logged in, I saw that my computer was wiped. I ran a DISM repair command, which took 4 hours and seemed to work as my computer was back. However, the next day I received the same message with the same outcome. I then followed the top comment on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/nrwejy/the_user_profile_service_service_failed_the_sig... which I couldn't as when the "continue to Windows 11" screen popped up, my keyboard and mouse disconnected. I unplugged them and replugged them, I tried different ports, but both yielded no results. Please help me.

Hi @bilbo8D

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m truly sorry you’ve had to go through this—especially after running a long DISM repair and still facing the same issue. The “User Profile Service failed to login” error combined with USB disconnection is deeply disruptive, and I appreciate the effort you’ve already put in.

Let’s walk through a clean, hardware-aware recovery path that avoids registry edits and helps restore stability.

Step-by-step recovery plan for “User Profile Service failed to login” with USB input failure

1. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking (to retain USB support)

Since your keyboard and mouse stop working at the login screen, we’ll need to boot into Safe Mode with USB drivers loaded:

  1. Hold the power button to force shutdown.
  2. Power on and immediately press F11 repeatedly to enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. When the options appear, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

This mode loads essential drivers, including USB, and may allow your keyboard and mouse to function.

2. Create a new local user profile

Once in Safe Mode:

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Accounts > Other users > Add account.
  3. Choose “I don’t have this person’s sign-in information”, then “Add a user without a Microsoft account”.
  4. Create a new local user (e.g., TempUser) and assign it Administrator rights.

This bypasses the corrupted profile and gives you a clean environment to work from.

3. Restart and log in with the new profile

  • Restart your PC normally.
  • Log in using the new account.
  • Confirm that your keyboard and mouse now work at the login screen.

4. Recover files from the old profile (if needed)

If your original profile data appears wiped:

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Users.
  2. Look for your old profile folder (e.g., C:\Users\YourName).
  3. If it exists, copy important files (Documents, Desktop, etc.) to your new profile.

5. Optional: Remove the corrupted profile

Once your new profile is stable and data is backed up:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  2. Select the old account and click Remove.

Additional steps to prevent recurrence

Run System File Checker:
Open Command Prompt as admin and run:

  • sfc /scannow

Check for Windows updates:
Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates.

Update BIOS and chipset drivers:
Visit: HP Omen Desktop Drivers
Enter your model and install the latest BIOS and chipset updates.

Let me know how far you get with these steps. You’ve done everything right by staying calm and methodical—I’ll be right here to guide you further if needed.

Sorry for the lack of communication but thank you for the suggestion. Things seem to be working fine now. After a 30min update, when usual updates take less than 10, I was able to click "Continue to Windows 11" in the shift restart page. Now the error doesn't seem to be popping up anymore.
