Edit / Update - Correction to syntax / Add example image

→ The simplest answer to "why" is that Scan and Print are two different functions of the printer.

Each function requires an application or software that can interpret your intentions and configure the job to create the expected output.

The tools -- applications or software -- that are available are dependent on the printer model and the Operating System / version of your device.

==================

Scan

Windows, for example, might support a full driver printer software for your printer and your OS / version.

The full driver includes HP Scan.

HP Scan includes a "Detect" content feature:

For PDF - Page Size = Detect Content on Page

For JPG - Page Size = Detect Photos

Using the "Detect Content on Page" can scan the content and extract the boundaries (edges) of the scanned content.

Example - HP Scan - PDF Scan - Main menu - More > Destination

9025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_Destination_149025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_Destination_14

Print 8.x10 inch

Print Photo

There are several factors, including more than one of ---

  • Printer - Load Paper - orientation / print surface up-down (printer model dependent)
  • Printer - Support for Paper Size / type / weight  -- Printer must be aware of the paper size / type settings - Tray and Paper
  • Windows - The full driver printer software installed to support the full range of Printing Preferences and settings
  • Windows - Printing Preferences > Shortcuts and settings - Size, Paper, Layout...
  • Windows - Possibly a Custom Paper Size form
  • WindowsPrinter Properties > Tab Advanced > Driver = HP driver and not IPP / Microsoft driver

Details / Examples

========================

Load Paper / Load Media

The printer requires supported paper to loaded in the printer according to the instructions in the Printer's User Guide.

Open

 Product Home - Printers

Enter the device type and model name of your HP product

Open Category Setup & User Guides

Find and open the user guide for your printer

Search for "load paper" or "load media"

========================

EWS - Tray and Paper

Print requires that the printer support -- and be made aware of -- the paper size, type, weight, and print surface.  Paper Size / Type is generally set / modified right after the paper is loaded (or the tray is opened / closed).  Depending on the printer model, the paper size / type might be set at the Printer Control Panel or using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Notes

Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel touchscreen might provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray or when the tray is opened and then closed.

Reminders

EWS (Embedded Web Server) provides access and control for Settings, including Tray and Paper.

Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

HP Smart / HP App Mobile might require that paper size / type is rechecked / adjusted before content is opened for print.

Newer printer?  Touchscreen Printer Control Panel locked against making changes?  Try username "admin" and the PIN located on the sticker on the inside of the front door of the printer.

Trays

  • If the printer lacks a second tray, all paper / types are supported in the single available tray.
  • Printers that include a Photo Tray generally restrict the paper sizes and paper type supported in that tray.

Custom size?

If your paper is a custom size, look for "Custom" in the full list of paper sizes.

Remember >> Printers with more than one tray might only support custom paper sizes and types in one of the available trays.

If EWS does not allow setting the paper size or size “Custom”,

If the printer includes a touchscreen display printer control panel,

Look for the setting for “Custom” in the Printer Control Panel after (re)loading the paper to be used

Generic - EWS - Tray and Paper

NOTE:  EWS Size Custom is not available for all printers

EWS > HP Document / How-to (InkJet Printers – Basic Information)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

OR

HP Laser Printers - Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Reminder

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

EWS – Tray and Paper Management / Paper > Trays

Classic EWS - InkJet Printers / Select other printers

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

OR

Alternate EWS format - Select newer InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next (as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray

-- NOTES --

In the case, of 8x10 inch prints, the size might be considered a "Custom Size".

If the 8x10 inch is considered a Custom Size on your printer, create a Custom Paper Size form.

For example - Windows -

Installing the full feature / full driver printer software provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences

Next,

Open and edit Printing Preferences to create a supported Custom Paper Size form.
