Hi @BigD1066,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You're encountering a “Pre-install failed” error while trying to install the CH341SER driver on your HP Notebook, which is commonly used for USB-to-serial communication (e.g., Arduino, TTL devices, etc.). This issue can be frustrating, but let’s walk through the steps to resolve it.

Step-by-Step Fix for CH341SER “Pre-install Failed” Error

1. Run the Installer as Administrator

  • Right-click the CH341SER.EXE file.
  • Select “Run as administrator”.
  • This ensures the installer has permission to write system-level files.

2. Disable Driver Signature Enforcement (Temporarily)

Some versions of Windows block unsigned drivers.

  • Press Shift + Restart to enter Advanced Startup.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings.
  • Press F7 to Disable driver signature enforcement.
  • Then run the installer again.

3. Check for Conflicting Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
  • Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • If you see any unknown or conflicting devices, right-click and uninstall them.
  • Restart your PC and try installing the driver again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
