We are proud to announce we have achieved a new sustainability milestone on another Poly headset! Read more about our commitment to sustainability!

Use case:

I am using the Voyager 5200 headset with the included charge case fully charged during some days. It's is expected that - after some time - the charge case will be slowly discharged while the headset stays on a relative high battery level (4-5 hours capacity). That's ok. After the charge case reaches a low battery level which will be indicated by a red LED it is expected that it's time to connect the charge case to a power supply to recharge it.

Problem:

In most cases the recharging of the charge case with an extern power supply when having a low battery level is NOT possible anymore. To be more precise: Nothing at all happens. The inserted headset could have a very high battery level and the extern power supply should only charge the charge case - but this won't work. Exactly nothing happens at all. This is a very big issue when travelling around. The only 'solution' is to try the workaround as described below and to try one of the two described scenarios.

Workarounds

The only workaround to recharge the discharged charge case is to connect the case directly to a computer where the software Poly Lens is installed. Remove the inserted headset to be able to recognize the charge case by the software. After this, there are two scenarios possible which are describe below:

Scenario 1: The charge case loads immediately and no other steps are necessary. It's advisable not to unplug the case and to use the extern power supply. Instead, let the case be plugged to the computer. The case will be fully charged after about 2 hours.

Scenario 2: The firmware of the case will be recognized by the software Poly Lens but there will be a notification that it's necessary to reinstall the so called 'boot loader'. Do that. It will take 1-2 minutes. After this the case should be loaded as described in scenario 1.

My guess:

The internal firmware of the case has big issues when reaching a low battery level.

  • In scenario 2, the firmware has obviously crashed completely which has the impact that it is necessary to reinstall the boot loader. After this the case seems to be able to 'reboot', and after this it charges as normal if you let it plugged. If you unplug it immediately from the computer the charge case will crash again because of the very low battery level.
  • If the firmware has not crashed completely as in scenario 1 the software Poly Lens seems to be able to 'restart' it without the help of a new installed boot loader. Obviously the battery level seems to be high enough that a installation of the boot loader is not necessary. But there seems to exist some issue which prevent the case from charging. Perhaps a simple software problem of the (partly crashed?) firmware.

Conclusions:

  • The whole thing is unacceptable. Of course it should be possible to recharge the battery case always. If you are travelling around you often have no opportunity to plug the case to a computer where Poly Lens is installed. And it costs much time.
  • Former charge cases of the Voyager 5200 with the label 'Plantronics' will always  charge because they have no firmware at all or a very robust firmware. There won't be ever the need to install a 'boot loader'.
  • I hope the the next model Voyager Legend 50 UC won't have this problem anymore. But I won't be willing to buy and to test ist.  I never had a piece of (relative simple) hardware with such a big problem.
  • Of course I replaced the headset several time by the help of the HP support. But every new device had the same problem. Therefore: It's a problem of the whole series - not a problem of a single device.

@Poly, I am asking you for the following solution:
Please replace my model Voyager 5200 UC with the actual model Voyager Legend 50. I hope that the issues described above won't happen again in your successor model. For sure you know the issues I described in this post.
