BIOS Lock

HP Recommended
HP ZBook 17 Mobile WorkStaion
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased this computer about a year ago from an electronic waste company for parts. At the time the LCD screen and keyboard were broken and I intended to use it for parts. Eventually I came across a screen and keyboard and after loading an operating system on it, realized that the computer works. I am getting the fan warning at startup although I have cleaned the fans, applied new thermal paste and I monitor the temperture with a third party software. It runs cool. The only thing I cant do is update the BIOS. It is adminastrator locked. Is there a way for me to unlock it?

HP can unlock business level systems by providing a SMC.bin file, but will likely need persuading that you are the legitimate owner of the system which might be difficult if you bought the system as scrap. All you can do is reach out directly to HP Support and be prepared to provide whatever proof of ownership is available.

@SeanLove

For that model you will need to contact HP in your region and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request.

Just to note:

Do not try removing the RTC/BIOS battery.  It will not remove the password, but it will reset the clock - as SMC files are time coded, a large disparity between the system clock and the time encoded in the SMC will cause it to fail.
