I recently purchased a 2nd hand HP laptop which was well looked after and taken care of. After purchasing I have tried to install a dual boot version of linux (as my work won't allow me to use Windows on a work laptop), and in attempting to set up the boot option I appear to have locked the computer by entering the wrong BIOS password - This is totally my own fault due to my own ignorance about the BIOS password differing from the admin password.
To solve this I've been directed to HP customer support, and on the chat system I was told that in order to reset this, I would need to replace the whole motherboard (which HP will carry out at considerable cost to myself). This doesn't seem particularly right, and as someone who has only just started working after a long period of unemployment I really can't afford an expense like this right now - or to not have my laptop to be able to work with. I am currently booting ubuntu manually from a USB on startup, but as it's essesntially temporary OS, I'm losing all my files ect whenever my system shuts down and it's a nightmare to work with and I need to get this fixed.
Having done some detailed reading, I can see that HP has sent out a file to be put on a USB to reset this BIOS password - why is this not the case anymore and how can I get this? If this is not possible then prehaps is there a way to disconnect the battery and do a 'manual' bios reset? And failing this is the only way to replace the whole motherboard, instead of just the BIOS chip?
If someone with some more expertise on this could help, I would be extremely greatful as I am in quite the quandary regarding this and need it solved.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to help you, since HP will no longer supply the required SMC.bin file that is used to clear the BIOS password.
That was the only way it could be done.
HP issued this document recently...
