Computer Crashes After Connecting To HP Thunderbolt G2 Dock

I'm trying to connect to various HP Thunderbolt G2 120W docks with a HP Elitebook 840 G5 laptop. Every time I disconnect from the dock and reconnect, the laptop crashes with a blue screen. Also, when I try updating the Thunderbolt G2 firmware to the latest version, it gets as far as US USB-Type C PD Controller driver and then that also crashes the laptop. I'm never able to complete the firmware update process. I've updated the BIOS of the laptop as well as other drivers, such as graphics, chipset, intel engine management, dock ethernet driver, and dock audio driver. Any ideas on why it's bluescreening every time?
