Elitebook 8760w abrupt shutdown and restart

Hi all,

My HP Elitebook 8760w (refurbished) keeps suddenly shutting down and restarting.

It looks and sounds like you would pull the AC when no battery is connected but then restarts normally.

It seems to happen randomly, I can go days without it but when it seems to happen (usually after a higher load for longer, playing a game) it happens nearly continuously and I need to let the machine stand for a while before I can use it again.

My Elitebook is running Ubuntu 18.04 and is on a cooling pad, I've monitored the temp of the CPUs and GPU and they don't seem to exceed about 65 degrees Celsius, which I thought would be within the normal limits.

While the laptop is connected to just the battery this isn't a problem and it continues normally.

I've tried a different AC charger but after using it twice, it seems to have broken. It might have something to do with the requested power by the laptop but the new AC charger matched the specs it needed.

Can someone please give me some advice since this is preventing me from working for longer periods of time.

Much appreciated
