Product: elite book 2740p

I recently purchased a used elitebook 2740p, it had no battery, I purchased one and plugged it in with the charger, battery light flashes repeatedly while charging, pc will not powerup.  I took out the battery and plugged the charger in and pressed power, I had a series of amber flashes from the battery light (8) I believe.  I did not pay much for the pc, but I want to use it, any ideas on what is wrong or how to fix it?
