Hi, I'm looking for a docking station for my HP 250 G9 (16GB / i7 / 512GB SSD) which I can use with 2 monitors - having the docking station charge the laptop could be a bonus too.

HP customer service said no HP docking station is compatible, is this correct? Anyone know of any docking stations that work?

Thanks in advance.

Hello.

The HP customer service rep was partially right... Your laptop cannot be powered through USB-C, and your USB-C ports are "data only", that is, your laptop does not route display data through them with so called DP Alt Mode. These limitations are also stated in the Specifications document for your model, page 11.

HP has one current dock model that should work with your laptop, and it is the HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2. It doesn't require DP Alt Mode, and is limited to only use 2 concurrent display outputs without DP Alt mode.

This dock provides display output with DisplayLink technology which works with a virtual display adapter driver. The user experience will be sub-optimal in even FullHD due to USB bandwidth limitations. Stationary stuff like Excel, Word, Image viewing will be perfectly fine but some things like fast scrolling a web page or HD video will not be as smooth as with the native HDMI port in your laptop.

There are also many other DisplayLink based products, not only from HP, and they are just as compatible as the HP dock. DisplayLink has a selector page to narrow down your choice.
