Standing in the Shadow of USB-C

There is a series of disturbing threads across the net discussing the FAILURE of HP USB-C charging ports.  This all came to light when my (relative) new HP Spectre 12" X2 FAILED to charge when connected t a PLUGABLE USB-C docking station.  To its credit Plugable has been extremely communicative on the subject.  My email inquiry was responded to by a Plugable owner/product manager, who was forthright, direct and HELPFUL!

Plugable docking stations are desirable because of the variety of connectivity options they provide.  They follow the technical specs implemented by the USB-IF (Implementers Forum) of which HP is a member.  USB.org lists some 57 HP employees including Mr. Kevin Chen, HP Platform Development Manager, as certified members of USB-IF.  Presumably HP pays for membership costs with income shared with equity partners and shareholders (HP is a publicly traded company on the NYSE. )  https://goo.gl/TFfbUe

USB-IF 1.0-2.0 specifies device charging to follow the Power Delivery Specification allowing charging through the USB-C port at a variety of power levels ( 5V, 9V, 12-15V, 20V ) - the purpose of which is to make these tiny connectors VERSATILE and UNIVERSAL - as in Universal Serial Port, USB. BUT! UNHAPPILY, the braintrust at HP Engineering or Marketing? thought they could do better.   So, they figured a gimmick to circumvent the specs they signed up to IMPLEMENT, requiring customers to buy only HP brand power chargers.  GAAAAK!! Hey, nothing wrong with promoting your own products (I got 40 years in software) but NOT BY VOIDING the very specs you signed up for!  HP has responded claiming off-market chargers could damage their products.  Okay, then CERTIFY those that actually follow the specs you have not!

This is a clear case of consumer abuse - which should be prosecuted by AG-Consumer Protection law.  IF you're going to advertise compliance with a Universal Standard like USB-C, or even simply IMPLICATE conformity, you had better CONFORM or face legal action from State AGs, and or shareholders (who don't want to be invested with deceptive practices.)  All of which is to say, HP owes their customers an APOLOGY to begin with, and a FIX to follow through.   Can HP muster the honesty and fortitude to accomplish these steps?  Only the Shadow Knows.
