Hi guys, I think I am having the same issue within this thread: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-Notebooks/Boot-with-external-display-and-laptop-lid-closed-in...
Just got my custom build 15u G6 from HP (just added a 2TB SSD instead of a 1TB) which set me back around $5000 AUD and took about a month to ship out due to COVID.
So far, not too happy with this machine, it was incredible sluggish and is now performing a lot better after removing all of the HP bloatware nonsense they pre-install. Why do companies do this?
Now I have an issue which I cannot seem to figure out how to fix.
When the lid is closed, but plugged into an external display, the machine doesn't turn on, whether it's from a cold boot or restarting the machine. I get a blank screen, with a small underscore at the top left hand corner, but that's all.
The lid has to be open for it to boot into windows, which I then, can close the lid and away I go. But doing so also messes up the start bar/task bar (makes it double the size).
If I open the lid after reboot, the screen is completely black and needs to be shut down via the power button, before I turn it on again.
I don't have this issue with other laptops I own (Macbook pro and a Metabox).
Any ideas how to fix this issue? I logged into the BIOS and tried to look for anything that might be causing it. I turned off Windows Hello and facial recognition since I won't be using it majority of the time (as cool as it is, typing a PIN is not that big of a deal).
I tried messing with power settings/LID closed settings. I updated both graphics card drivers from the manufacturers websites.
Nothing has worked.
Also any idea how to turn off that loud obnoxious beep that the BIOS makes when you're navigating to certain screens? Who in their right mind thought that was a wise idea to implement?
I found a setting to turn off regarding Audio Beeps but it didn't solve the issue for me.
Please help, before I have to send this machine back and spend months looking for the holy-grail of laptops once again.

before you go any further, run HP Image Assistant and update the BIOS and all drivers as suggested by the application... you do not describe what do you have connected to the laptop when the lid is closed... is it just a monitor, is it a dock - if so, which dock? the more details the better
PS. do not install drivers directly from the manufacturer unless recommended to solve a specific issue that the tested and validated version from HP does not solve... it is not recommended
