HP ZBook Power G7 Mobile Workstation (10J85AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My Org(Microsoft) requires is to do updates immediately after they are issued. I was doing the recent BIOS update required by my organization and it hung during the camera portion of the update. It hangs at 100% and does nothing. I read a few other posts related to this and it seems that HP is telling people to hard restart their computer. And I of course held the power button while praying to every deity I know, just to make sure it would restart and not fry my computer. Luckily my prayers were answered by at least one of them. The computer restarted and continued with the update.

My question is, why hasn't HP done anything about this? It is obviously a problem since there are multiple posts about the same issue. It is whatever is in the camera portion of the update that is causing a hang at 100%. And I am asking for all for the not-so-tech-oriented people out there that don't know to Google the issue and even the ones who wouldn't trust what they found anyways.

And now HP owes me back some of the brown hairs that turned grey this morning! Luckily I am able to start work today with only a minor hiccup. Today....

Hi @MttaborTurtle1

I don't know why you had this problem. I have the same model, and when Windows Update updated the firmware to version 01.09.00, the laptop restarted and after 10 minutes it was updated.

I think he had a moment of bad luck.

Remember in these laptop   there are several restarts and the laptop turns off and after 30 seconds, it turns on again if you interrupt any of these processes you may have problems in the update.

I work for Microsoft so I definitely know what a hang is. And I waited 30 minutes before I did anything. It just sat on 100%. Just Google "hp zbook hangs on bios update" and you will find examples of the same issue in the same place which is at the camera portion of the update. Two of those threads are in this hp forum.

I figured I'd start a new thread instead of commenting on those other threads that were closed. I just want you guys to be aware of it because it definitely exists and it definitely is happening to more than 1 person/machine. And I know how sensitive bios updates are and what can happen when they go wrong. It even says if you cut power to the machine it can become unoperable, which is super scary to someone who is not tech savvy. And if I can save one other person from that scary moment I have done something good today!

Even if there is a general statement saying that in case it hangs at 100% for longer than n minutes simply hold down the power button, it may help someone.

I understand that it is scary, but also keep in mind that in the BIOS of these enterprise laptops, BIOS recovery is enabled by default.  So it activates when you reboot the laptop and does the recovery.

I have already updated the BIOS 3 times, without having any problem..
