Elitebook 840 g1
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I currently have a 32GB m.2 2242 card Model: LSS-32L6G-HP 2242 device in an 840 g1 (HP PN: 729664-001).

The drive has 2 key slots and the laptop 1.

I am not clear reading the posts exactly what spec I want to buy a new larger capacity drive.  I think there are 2 types: SATA and PCIe.  Does any one know what to shop for?

So have you put the 32 gb M.2 in the laptop?

The SSD slot is as shown:

The slots don't matter: the prongs of the drive fit into the slot and it works if you have the right kind.

What you have looks like this, right?

2242 mSATA SSD2242 mSATA SSD

Something like this would work:

https://www.amazon.com/KingSpec-2242-Internal-Solid-Ultrabook/dp/B07CJ4BSK8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=...

The laptop is definitely too old to use any kind of PCIe/NVME disk. It is a 2242 form factor mSATA SSD.

On this model I believe it can be set as primary storage i.e. you can run Windows from it.

If that 32 gig mSATA is configured as a cache disk you likely will not get the computer to boot up if you remove it and you may have to do some configuration to undo the cache acceleration settings.

Post back with any further questions and please accept as solution if its the info you needed.

So the key takeaway to me is your comment "The laptop is definitly too old to use any kind of PCIe/NVME disk.  It is a 2242 form factor mSATA SSD."  I went through both the user and service manuals and they do not say anything other than "M.2 (NGFF) SSD" which is not helpful now with multiple controller types running off the same mechanical specification.

I found this article which covers the controllers (AHCI vs NVME2?)  and about half-way down actualy states that the 840 G1 is SATA, not PCIe.  It also references the G2 as SATA with a dead link to an HP ppage for also supporting PCIe.  Not clear if a device can support both.  Do I need to ask about the BIOS config for AHCI vs UFEI?

As for the Kingspec you cited, if you go to the NT-128 version on Amazon the description reads PCIe, which made me a bit nervous until I found the spec sheet.  The spec sheet does indicate that this product will work in an 840 G1 specificaly.  Amazon's just wrong, but that's half the issue.  Some adds will say PCIe, but most do not say SATA expicitly seperate from SATA 3.0 or 6.0 GBps.

I am not sure your reference to mSATA is correct.  I think mSATA uses the same controller, but different mechanicals.  I believe the card is wider.

The picture is exactly what I have and it is configured as a data drive currently.  FWIW, I think it appeared with the 1.46 BIOS.  I did not have to go through the BIOS switch flicking I read in another post (bivoy).

The Kingspec is definitely exactly the kind of disk that will work in your system. The key thing is the 42 mm length and the three-prong B + M keyed connectors.

Above I said "Some adds will say PCIe, but most do not say SATA expicitly seperate from SATA 3.0 or 6.0 GBps." which I now believe to be incorrext.  The fact that it says SATA means it's a SATA vs PCIe interface.

I purchased KingSpec 2242 NGFF 512GB M.2 SSD SATA III 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive and tried to install it to my Hp Elitebook 840 G1 but it does not show up as a hard drive on the pc. Why do I need to do or should I return it. Is it compatible with my computer? Please advise

Please start by confirming what BIOS and OS you are on.  If you are not on 1.46 please upgrade to this version (for now).  I think there is a newer one, but I have not tried it, so lets stick with something that works.

Also in the BIOS config, F10, under Advanced => Built in devices => Msata make sure it is enabled

Did you check Disk Management to make sure the disk is initialized and formatted?

What else have you done?
