HP MT42
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Hi Everyone,

I submitted this question to the Software forum, but thought this forum might be more appropriate because I'm working with a Thin Client.

My wife's employer was getting rid of some thin clients and I was able to purchase two MT42 Thin Clients (4gb RAM, 32gb HD, AMD Pro A8-8600) running Windows 7 Embedded 32bit machines.

These computers will be given to one of our friend's two children that primarily use Google Chromebooks and Apps (Docs, Sheets, etc.) at school. I've got a few questions on the best way to set these up for their use.

  1. First, these run Win 7 embedded. Can they be upgraded to Windows 10? and if so, how? I do have a USB stick with Windows 10 that was used on other machines I've updated, but they were full versions of Windows.
  2. With limited on board storage (32gb) I know I can't load additional programs, but could maybe use a flash drive or external hard drive. Anything I should consider when doing that? The most they might add is some additional photo editing software or light games (minecraft or steam games).
  3. My wife's IT person mentioned having Admin and User accounts and the use of HP Write Manager. I know a thin client is supposed to be managed and kept clean by having IT oversee stuff. Given that just a single young user is going to be using these much like their school Chromebook, should I be setting up Admin and User accounts and what should I do with Write Manager?

I'm assuming that most of the time these two students will be mostly on the internet doing classwork through Google Apps, streaming music or videos, or playing games. I may not need to change much on these machines, but I'm unfamiliar with Thin Clients or, for that matter, Chromebooks. These MT42's look to be very nice machines and I am hoping that they work well for the students.

Thanks for the help and advice,

Gary
