The G5 docking station does not appear to actually be a Thunderbolt dock

I've been struggling with the G5 dock for a year now as we start getting 4K monitors coming into the work environment. The problem is that we cannot connect even ONE 4K monitor to the docking station unless we run it at 30 Hz. The only alternative is to go into the laptop BIOS and set it in an alternate display mode that slows down all the USB 3 ports to USB 2 and cuts the network speed as well. This is obviously not an acceptable compromise. I had thought this was a limitation in the laptop but I tried it with a Dell docking station and it was able to run a 4K monitor at 60 Hz with no issues, so it does seem to be the dock, not the laptop. 

Is there a different docking station available - or do we have to go to a non-HP dock?

Firstly the HP USB-C G5 dock is NOT a Thunderbold dock. HP has few Thunderbolt docks for Thunderbolt™ 3 and  Thunderbolt™ 4

On page 3 of the manual for the machine we can only see it has following ports:

• HDMI 2.0
• Audio-out (headphone)/audio-in (microphone) combo jack
• (2) USB Type-A ports
• (2) USB Type-C® ports (no more info)

and from its specs

• (2) USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports (again, not much info)
• (2) USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports (charging)
• (1) Headphone/microphone combo jack
• (1) HDMI 2.0 port
• (1) AC Power input port

I can say definitely your machine and your dock are NOT compatible.
