Welcome to HP Support Community, @philip404

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

1. Restart the Laptop

A simple restart can refresh keyboard and audio services.

2. Verify Shortcut Use

Check if the mute keys require Fn + key.

Try toggling Fn Lock (usually Fn + Esc) and retry the mute buttons.

3. Update Audio Drivers

Right-click Start → Device Manager

Expand Sound, video and game controllers

Right-click your audio device → Update driver

Select Search automatically for drivers

4. Reinstall the Audio Driver (If Update Doesn’t Work)

In Device Manager, right-click your audio device

Choose Uninstall device

Restart laptop → Windows reinstalls automatically

5. Update Drivers via HP Support Assistant

Open HP Support Assistant → Updates

Install BIOS, keyboard, and audio-related updates.

6. Install Windows Updates

Search Windows Update

Click Check for updates

Install everything, including optional driver updates.

7. Test Function Key Hardware

Check if other function keys (volume up/down, brightness) work.

If they don’t → possible keyboard hardware issue.

If they do → issue is software/driver-related.

8. Reset BIOS Defaults

Restart laptop → press F10

Choose Restore Defaults

Save and exit

This resets keyboard-related firmware settings.

9. Check HP Hotkey Support Software

The mute key light and function require HP’s hotkey driver.

Press Win + R → type appwiz.cpl

Look for HP Hotkey Support or HP System Event Utility

If missing → download from HP support page → install → restart

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I am an HP Employee. Although I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
