when I connect Type B- connector to USB upstream port on the rear of the monitor, monitor says input signal not found and laptop does not recognize the connection. there is not a USB option on the display input menu. all drivers are installed on the HP 840 laptop. tried 2 cables. is it display hardware?

see attached picuture and explain what connector did you use, please.
From left to right:
1) Display Port ( test the connection to your notebook, if you have a display port cable )
2) HDMI ( test the connection to your notebook)
3) D-Sub (VGA)
4) USB-B 3.0 ( test upstream )
=> To make it easier to understand, usb upstream extends the available USB ports on your notebook so that you can connect more USB devices directly to the side of your monitor. So it has nothing to do with the screen input of your monitor.

Please install:
HP Display Center
Driver-Display
Update the Firmware (of your monitor)
