Add HP USB 3.0 card to Z and xw workstations

HP Recommended

I have a Z800 Rev.003 motherboard.  I have installed the QT587AA .  I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and after installing the drivers from the Z620 support site, it works fine in Windows.

I have not, however, been able to get it to work in boot-up.

If I move my usb keyboard from the Z800's rear USB 2 ports, it does not work until after Windows starts.  I cannot use it to access the BIOS settings .

I have a USB DVD-drive and cannot boot if it is connected fo the QT537AA.

I have a USB 3.0 card reader from Transcend.  I would also like to be able to boot from that.

Going ito the Z800 BIOS and telling to to "Load Option ROM on the QT537A does not change this.  Nor does going into the Hardware security settings and hiding all of the USB 2.0 ports.

Any other suggesions would be appreciated!

LambdaFox,

Some speculations:  If only to eliminate them as possibilities, update:  system BIOS, chipset, and system USB controller driver.  Can you list here the boot sequence in BIOS?  As far as I know, for booting from USB, the system BIOS would need to be able to recognize USB 3.0 to load the controller driver during startup. this whould have solved with loading the Optio ROM but what may be happening is that the BIOS and or chipset predate recognition of the OPrion ROM.  The system starts but until the 3rd party PCIe USB card driver loads, it won't run the 3.0 ports.

Cheers,

Hi LambdaFox,

I believe it is only motherboards with an UEFI BIOS that can recognise USB 3.0 ports at POST.  Your HP Z800 has a standard Legacy BIOS only whereas the HP Zx20 and HP Zx40 series workstations have both Legacy and UEFI BIOS options. Looks like you are limited to USB 2.0 ports at POST.
