Hp Z420
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey! I got a hp z420 v1 with 2 6 pin PCIe connectors from a school (they upgraded) and I am trying to build a budget gaming system for older games with a gtx 580, I have a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter because it needs 1 6 pin and an 8 pin, it says on tech powerup the gtx 580 uses 244 watts and I don't now if this will work with my z420  so if you guys can help me that would be great, I just want to make sure it will work before I buy one

Specs:

Xeon e5 1603

8 GB hp ddr3 OEM ram

Quadro 600 1gb

Hi Rylin, looks like your graphics card query has been answered, but here are a couple of suggestions since you mention you're building a budget gaming rig.

1. Consider upgrading the CPU to an E5-1620. There are a few for sale on eBay, all listed under £10 (GBP). This CPU has a base frequency of 3.6GHz (3.8GHz boost) compared to the E5-1603's 2.8GHz fixed clock speed. Definitely a cheap upgrade and would make a significant improvement in game frame rate.

2. Make sure you have at least 4 DIMM (memory) modules installed. Both the 1603 and 1620 CPU's support 4 memory channels and optimal CPU performance is only achieved if the 4 channels are utilized.

3. Double the available memory to 16GB if possible. The Windows 10 OS can be a bit memory hungry and will use quite a bit of system RAM just running in the background. Windows hogging 5GB of RAM is not that uncommon. Since the GTX580 is only a 1.5GB RAM card, adding more system RAM makes sense.

4. If you don't have one already, add an internal SSD drive to dramatically boost game loading times.

Happy gaming . . .

i owned a 580, and yes that card will draw over 200 watts!!!

next do you have the stock 400 watt supply or the upgraded 600 watt unit? (you appear to have the 600 watt based on the 2 gpu cables) if you have 400 watt you can not use the gtx580

if you have the 600 watt supply be advised only the earlier units have two 6 pin gpu lines, later builds of the 600 watt unit only have one so you would need a 6 pin to a dual 6 +2 pin, the problem is it's hard to find quality adapters as visually they all look the same

last, it's possible to replace the HP supply with a normal "SINGLE RAIL" ATX supply from a NAME BRAND using a adapter

Yes i have the 600 watt psu, so am i fine with the gtx 580? if not I can get a 570 for a couple bucks cheaper

yes the HP quickspecs shows a Quadro K6000 12GB Graphics as a HP approved card, this card draws 225 watts which matches your gtx 580

one thing i forgot to mention is the HP 6 to 8 pin adapter which is the gold standard (nothing better) it has thicker leads with more copper wires and genuine molex connectors, it can be found usually for 50.00 and sometimes as low as 20.00

for those supplies that only have one 6 pin cable
