HP Z420
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello!

I now have this drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200.

I wish to add the new SSD dicsk to my HP Z420 workstation:

Samsung 850 Evo-Series 250GB 2.5" SATA III 3D V-NAND

Can you please comment if I can isntall the original system on this disk and make it bootable?

Thanks!

dima999,

Yes, the Samsung 850 Evo works very well in the z420.  I'm using the 850 Evo 250GB in a z420 (E5-1660 v2), and a z620 (2X E5-2690). They're very fast and reliable.

Assuming you have the SATA version, install the 850 Evo in the lowest drive bay- you'll need a 2.5" to 3.5" drive bay adapter.  Try and use an HP adapter so the drive power cable is aligned with the others. Plug the 850 Evo data cable is plugged into the right-most SATAIII port and cable for the Seagate in the next to right-most.  Those are the only two 6GB/s ports.- all the other ports-light grey- are 3GB/s.

If you have Windows and Programs on the Seagate Barracuda, with software, it's possible to simply clone the C: Drive complete with all settings from the Seagate to the 850 Evo- no re-installation is necessary.  Use the "optimize for SSD" option. I installed Windows and Programs to an M.2 Drive and it could be plugged into two different z620's and a z420 and run without any problem as the BIOS and OEM Windows are the same in both models. windows is automatically activated. There are of course reasons to rebuild the drive if the installation is old or there is new software.

If ou have the HP carry handle in the Z420 you can also use one of the 2 2.5" bays in the back of that.
