Hi, @RainierWillie

I don't believe that a BIOS update will make any difference.

There seems to be compatibility issues with Samsung SSD's on some HP desktop PC's from several posts I have read.

A drive that generally works in most PC's is the Western Digital Blue SA510 2.5" SATA SSD, as BeemerBiker indicated.

FWIW, here is the link to the last BIOS update HP released for your PC.

It was written to be run on W8, so I don't know what will happen if you run it on W10.

version 8.10.

Sometimes the HP support pages go in and out, so here is the direct link to the file download in case you can't access the above link.

I could not find any good documentation for your motherboard.  I believe you have this one

https://www.ebay.com/itm/134703719758

I have read that before 2016 the dark blue SATA connector was SATA-III and the others SATA-II but that should not make any difference as SDD and HDD are backwards compatible from SATA-III speeds.

Do you have a link to the Samsung SSD product?  Some high performance SSD have 4k sector size and older motherboard expecting 512 byte size ay not be able to boot them.  What cloning software did you use?

I have great luck with WD blue such as this series
