The last few BIOS updates I have run on my Z2 Mini G4 leaves the fans running full blast. The only way to reset it is to shut it down, unlpug it from AC power, plug it back in, and then restart it. Is there any way to avoid this occuring in the future?

I installed the update on a USB flash drive as the instructions recommended and used that to execute the BIOS update. The update ran fine, but when my system booted up after the update, the fans were going like crazy.

Ok.
I'm not familiar with your specific system, however, Intel motherboards have had problems with the exact same issue in 2018. BIOS update works fine, but the default settings makes the fans rev up to max and stay there...
Obviously, my Z600 doesn't have the same BIOS as your rig, so unfortunately I can't walk you through the potential fix. But it's quite straight forward if your BIOS allows you to change one parameter in the CPU config.
Note that I could be way off here, But no harm in looking in to it...
On startup, enter BIOS.
Go to Advanced Menu/Advanced Settings or similar and then Processor Configuration/CPU Configuration.
If there's a "Processor C6 Report" enabled, then there's your problem. Disable it, save changes and exit.
As I said. Could be way off, but you never know...

I called HP Support and we ran through a number of things.
1) First he had me reset BIOS to Factory Default.
2) There was a "fan" setting ("Increase Idle Fan Speed%) buried in there under "Built-In Device Options". It was set to "0".
3) He had me run a Diagnostic test to see if the fans ramped up and they did not.
4) I redid the BIOS update and it did not go through the additional steps that it had done before. [As I recall there were 3 steps with reboots in between]
5) When it came back to Windows it was working fine.
So I don't know what might have been the issue. I don't know what that fan setting was before the BIOS update. We will see what happens when I do the next BIOS update.
