CPU Processor on Z400 Workstation (6 Dimm)

HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello HP experts,

I'm just curius if there are other supported CPU for Z400 workstation aside from the listed processors below:

Intel® Xeon® processor
W3503, 2.40 GHz, 4 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, 4.8GT/s QPI, Dual-Core
Intel Xeon processor W3505, 2.53 GHz, 4 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, 4.8GT/s QPI, Dual-Core
Intel Xeon processor W3520, 2.66 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, 4.8GT/s QPI, Quad-Core, HT, Turbo
Intel Xeon processor W3550, 3.06 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, 4.8GT/s QPI, Quad-Core, HT, Turbo
Intel Xeon processor W3565, 3.20 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, 4.8GT/s QPI, Quad-Core, HT, Turbo
Intel Xeon processor W3670, 3.20 GHz, 12 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, 4.8GT/s QPI, Six-Core, HT, Turbo
Intel Xeon processor W3680, 3.33 GHz, 12 MB cache, 1333 MHz memory, 6.4GT/s QPI, Six-Core, HT, Turbo
Intel Xeon processor W3690, 3.46 GHZ, 12 MB cache, 1333 MHz memory, 6.4GT/s QPI, Six-Core, HT, Turbo

I noticed that Z400 and Z600 has Processor Socket :  LGA1366

Does it mean that the supported processors of Z600 will work with Z400 ?

Intel® Xeon® processor1,2 E55043, 2.00 GHz, 4 MB cache, 800 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55063, 2.13 GHz, 4 MB cache, 800 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55203, 2.26 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55303, 2.40 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55403, 2.53 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1066 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55503, 2.66 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1333 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55603, 2.80 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1333 MHz memory, Quad-Core
Intel Xeon processor1,2 E55703, 2.93 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1333 MHz memory, Quad-Core

Does it mean that I can use any CPU processor as long as its compatible with LGA 1366 or what they called Socket B?

no , the bios and the chipset can only support those two cpu famlies  (w35xx  and E55xx) on the original motherboard

however, if you have a version 2 motherboard: with the later boot block date (11/10/09, from BIOS)

and the 6 memory slots you can also run the  X56xx series cpu up to the x5690

if you run the 130 watt cpu's you will also need the higher capacity "Performance" 463981-001 heatsink/fans that can handle the 130W max TDP processors.   These are larger, have 92x92x25 mm fans, and have 3 instead of 2 heat tubes built in

And, every once in a while a processor may be found that works in a HP workstation that never had this documented.  This will work for the Z400, version 2..... the X5690 (a two QPI link analog to the single QPI link W3690).  And if you step one processor slower (to save significant funds) to just a bit slower, you'll find the W3680 officially supported.  And, it has its two QPI link analog, the X5680.

Turns out the two QPI link X5690 and X5680 processors both work mighty fine in the Z400 version 2.  Rocket ships.....

The large majority of Z400s, especially the v2 ones, were sold with 130W processors so almost by definition you'll have one of the Performance heatsink/fans already if you have a Z400 v2.

And, I personally have run the two top dogs for the Z600 v2 workstations, the X5672 and the X5675 processors in test Z400 v2 workstations.  Those run cooler, at 95W max TDP.  So, you can run those under the bigger Z400 Performance heatsink/fan or the smaller Mainstream heatsink/fan you see used in the Z400/Z600/Z800.

@SDH

Since you were able to confirm that X5680 and X5690 work in Z400 ver2.

I assume the X5670 will also work?

just to confirm because someone is selling me X5690

That X5670 has a sSpec code of SLBV7, and on eBay those are going for as low as 45.00 including shipping from a US seller.

I only buy these high end processors from US sellers with good reputations..... remember that these used to go for around $1400.00 USD and there was temptation, and I have heard some stories and seen 1 processor I believe was tampered with.

So, the answer is that I believe the X5670 will work fine, but have not done this experiment myself.  Be a contributor and buy it, and let us know.
