Zbook 17 G0 or base model
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This computer is HP Zbook 17 G0 or base model and has been having recurrent logical disk problems with frequent running of chkdsk /scan or chkdsk /r

It has a 750 GB HD working with a 32 GB flash cache in RAID 0.

This is a default setting and in order to turn off RAID the Intel RST is needed to disable acceleration.

The computer had failure to boot.

If the 750 GB HD were to be moved to the secondary bay of another computer or to and externa HD enclosure is would likely be unreadable or RAW.

Using boot rescue software the HP drive was unable to be installed.

In the revision history there was an older driver for this configuration and this driver installation also failed.

After a temporary boot fix the Intel RST was downloaded and installed.  It had two choices:  Repair or uninstall.  In order to complete the repair it required a reboot.

After another temporarty boot repair it displayed:

IAStorUI.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\MSCVP120_CLR0400.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.  Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.  Error status 0xc0000020.

The repair was repeated two additional times and displayed the same result.

How do you disable the acceleration so that the RAID 0 is off and the HD can be moved to other computers or an external HD enclosure and become a readable drive?

How do you troubleshoot the above failure to repair or install the HP driver for the Intel RST.

Each time the computer is booted it displays no bootable device found.

Multiple power off and power on do not open the windows advanced troubleshooting menu.

Power on and repetitively clicking control + I opens the bios menu for F keys.

Then clicking return or enter somehow activates the automatic repair which enables the wallpaper to appear and then a logon to the desktop.

What is happening with control  + I or control + L or contorl + c that a return after viewing the bios F key menu triggers automatic repair?

How come the automatic repair is only temporary and it continues to display no bootable device found?

What does control + I do to the Intel RST software or controller?

The HP UEFI diagnostics were run testing  the RAM and HD and passed.  The drive was also checked using multiple third party software and passed all tests.

Other methods listed in the Intel RST software to disable RAID are using ROM or UEFI options in the BIOS.  Does the HP zbook not have any of these options and only relies on the Intel RST driver?

if i'm understanding you corectly you have a physical 750GB drive that is using the intel RST to create a Raid 0 partition using the 32GB SSD on the 750GB drive is this correct?

also from your description it seems that the 750GB drive is failing (bad sectors) is this correct?

what does the current drive show for the partition list?

All drive testing have passed:

HP UEFI diagnostics

Crystal Disk:  SMART

HD Tune:  SMART, Benchmark, and Full error scan

Sea Tools for Windows:  long generic

The zbook 17 G0 base model came with a 750 GB HD and a 32 GB flash cache in RAID 0.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-zbook-17-mobile-workstation/5387509/model/538751...

By default the hardware is always in RAID 0 unless the Intel RST software (HD Driver) is used.

On the Intel RST software > performance tab > is a link for acceleration.

When acceleration is disabled the 750 GB HD works independently of the 32 GB flash cache.

The RAID 0 is disable and the 750 GB drive can be moved to the secondary bay of another computer to transfer folders and files.

HP support wants to run the BIOS disk sanitizer on the drive then clean install Windows 10 then reinstall drivers, applications and folders and then evaluate for any recurrent chkdsk problems.

They don't seem to believe in logical drive failure but only hardware failure on the zbook HD.

In order to run the BIOS disk sanitizer the folders and files need to be backed up.

To backup the folders and files the goal is turn off RAID 0 so the drive can be moved to the secondary bay of another computer.

The drive can be moved but the RAID 0 needs to be off to be able to read the folders and files.

How can the HP driver be installed so that the RAID 0 can be disabled?

What other methods are there to turn off RAID 0 on a zbook 17 base model?

Should there be ROM or UEFI methods?

The drive is UEFI GPT partition.

This is information from the Intel RST software:

ROM and UEFI were not yet found on the zbook 17 G0.

Disabling Acceleration
You can disable acceleration on a disk or volume if you want to:
• Enable acceleration on a different disk or volume.
• Return the solid-state drive to pass-through.
• Physically move an accelerated disk or volume to another computer.

Completing this action makes any cached data associated with the accelerated disk or volume immediately inaccessible. If the current acceleration mode is maximized, disabling acceleration may take a while to complete, depending on the cache and the solid-state drive size. You can use other applications during this time.

1. Click ‘Performance’, and then click ‘Disable acceleration’ in the Intel® Smart Response Technology page.
2. In the dialog, click ‘Yes’ to confirm.
3. The page refreshes and reports the acceleration as disabled.

In the event that you are unable to open or access Intel® Rapid Storage Technology due to an application error or operating system issue, you will need to disable acceleration using the option ROM or the UEFI driver user interface.
Complete the following steps to disable acceleration using the option ROM user interface.
1. Restart your computer.
2. Press 'Ctrl'+'I' to access the main menu of the option ROM user interface.
3. Select ‘Acceleration Options’ from the main menu.
4. Select the accelerated disk or volume.
5. If acceleration is in maximized mode, type 's' to synchronize data from the flash memory to the accelerated disk or volume. Otherwise, go to step 7.
6. Press ‘Y’ to confirm.
7. Type 'r’ to remove acceleration.
8. Press ‘Y’ to confirm.

Complete the following steps to disable acceleration using the UEFI driver user interface.
1. Restart your computer.
2. Access the BIOS menu.
3. Navigate to 'Intel® Rapid Storage Technology' and press the 'Enter' key.
4. Select the accelerated disk or volume in the main menu.
5. Select 'Remove Acceleration'.
6. Press the 'Enter' key to confirm.

from your description, it appears that the RST software is not in raid 0, but is being used to make the 32GB ssd act as a intelegent  cach for storing/loading files (IE-Acceleration)  that are most often used on the 750GB drive. as such there is no raid 0 configured

furthermore, the coruption errors do point to a hardware error reguardless of what your programs show

it's possible the 750 HD is fine and the errors stem from the 32GB ssd as it caches then tries to supply the most commonly accessed files

i recomend you follow HP advice and backup data (which should allways be done) and reinstall the OS using the restore procedure

if you disable acceleration, which removes the SSD from caching the most commonly used files on the 750GB drive and still have coruption issues that means the SSD is removed from the list of bad/failing suspects

intel RST acceleration must be removed/disabled before trying to install any other method of drive caching and i'm guessing you have RST v14 or higher

last, HP does not show a zbook 17in G0 model they do show G2 and up models

The RST software is always in RAID 0 as they are the default settings.

If the drive were changed or if windows was clean installed the drive hardware is always in RAID 0.

When there are problems with the drive or the operating system the drive folders and files need to be backed up.

In order to backup the folders and files the RAID 0 needs to be turned off to move the drive to another computer to copy and paste the folders and files.

If the computer remains in RAID 0 the other computers cannot read the files.  They are either unreadable or RAW.

So the RAID 0 acceleration needs to be disabled.

In order to disable the acceleration the HP driver or Intel RST software needs to be installed.

The driver when installed allowed repair and required a reboot to complete the installation.

After the boot the Intel RST was opened and displayed the error message:

IAStorUI.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\MSVCP120_CLR0400.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.  Error status 0xc0000020.

The 32 GB flash cache is not an SSD drive.

It cannot function as a SSD drive.

Nothing can be placed on this drive.

It works with the 750 GB HD by hardware design and by default is in RAID 0.

The purpose of this thread to to install or fix the HP driver or Intel RST software.

The drive link was provided.

The Intel RST is needed to turn off the acceleration.

In the earlier post the link was provided for the HP zbook G0 base model.

In summary the 750 GB HD and 32 GB drives are always in RAID 0.

This is how the system was designed.

In order to turn off RAID 0 HP has a driver.

The driver installs Intel RST and on the RST is a performance tab.

On the performance tab is a link to click, acceleration, and when this is clicked it has an option to disable the acceleration.

Once the acceleration is disabled it is no longer in RAID 0.

Again if the HP driver is not available it will remain in RAID 0.

The problem is the driver.

How do you fix the driver so that it can be installed and open Intel RST so that RAID 0 can be disabled?

HP Recommended

first of all raid 0 REQUIRES two drives, you can not do raid 0 with only one drive. and if you were in raid 0 you would only have a 32gb raid 0 partition

your system is configured to use the 32gb drive as a cache device to accelerate the speed of the 750GB main drive,  this is not a true raid 0, the RSTsoftware is simply telling the system to load data that is frequently accessed from the 750gb drive to be copied (mirrored) on the 32GB device and to have it serve the data instead of the 750GB drive. as long as this driver is active the os on the 750gb drive will keep looking for the 32gb cache for the requested data

if a reinstall of the rst software fails due to drive or OS level coruption i recomend you do as HP recomends and reinstall the OS

" HP  ZBook 17 Base Model" is not the same thing as a HP Zbook 17 G0 as there is no G0 model and this will confuse people and should not have been added

even if you could manually remove references to the driver from the OS, there is no guantee that you can reinstall it since the Os or drive is throwing up errors.

you can try the things below and see if that works

Method 1: Run the SFC.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

Follow the below steps:

  1. Right click on the Start button, click on Command Prompt (Admin).

  2. Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit Enter.

Now see if you can reinstall the RST console

Method 2: Run the DISM Tool.

If the issue persists, I would have you run the DISM tool to check the system health and will try to restore the files.

  1. Right click on the Start button, click on Command Prompt (Admin).

  2. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:

  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

   3.  To close the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.

The tool might take 15-20 minutes to finish running, so please do not cancel it.

Method 3: Check if you are able to access the system tray icon using different user account.

This computer is an HP zbook 17 base mode.

The HP support technicians have used both base model and G0 when discussing this computer.

There is no G1

There is a G0, G2, G3, G4, G5

The computer comes with hardware that consists of a HD and a flash cache.

There are two drives in RAID 0.

One drive is larger than the other and they both are in RAID 0.

This is the default setting for this computer.

When large size SSD were expensive HP came out with the RAID 0 to allow the faster boots and better performance of HD.

With the RAID 0 there is a faster boot and better performance.

There are problems with RAID 0 and that occurs when there are either hardware or software problems with the drive.

In this case there are software problems with the drive.

The software problems were drive file system problems or recurrent chkdsk problems.

These recurrent chkdsk problems have turned into additional problems with the operating system.

The goal is to save the files on the drive.

let me repeat the GOAL is to save the files on the drive.

This thread was opened to save the files on the drive.

In order to save the files on the drive I would like to move the drive to another computer.

Then in the secondary bay of the other computer to copy and paste the files.

Once the files are recovered the drive can be clean installed or disk sanitized.

The drive cannot be disk sanitized until the files are saved.

The drive cannot be clean installed untile the files are saved.

The GOAL again is to save the files.

In order to be able to move the 750 GB HD from the primary bay of the problematic computer to the secondary bay of another computer the RAID 0 needs to be disabled.

If the RAID 0 is not disabled the drive files will not be able to be read.

It is likely that disk management, file explorer, and device manager will not recoginize the drive in the secondary bay.

The BIOS will recognize the drive in the secondary bay.

For the files to be saved Windows must be able to recognize the file system on the drive.

In order for Windows to recognize the file system on the drive the RAID 0 must be disabled.

The operating system is corrupt and cannot be fixed by scannow, restorehealth or an in place upgrade repair.

A method to turn off RAID 0 is needed.

The HP driver or Intel RST is not working properly.

A system reset with save files failed.

System restore did not have restore points that predated the problems.

Startup repair did not fix the operating system problems.

To repeat the purpose of this thread is to turn off RAID 0 to be able to save the drive files.

There are two versions of the driver available on the HP website.  The second version is seen in the revision history.

Both drivers displayed the same error message.

Earlier in the thread there were three methods that the Intel software posted as methods to turn off RAID 0.

Did you look at these methods?

The software method has failed?

Should this computer have a ROM method?

Should this computer have a UEFI method?

If so how do you perform either the ROM or the UEFI method?

What other methods are available to turn off the RAID so that the files can be recovered?

HP Recommended

you can not turn of raid 0 because you do not have a raid 0  array. If you don't believe me feel free to use google and read up on the hardware requirements of a raid 0 array

you have a system that has a mech 750GB hard drive that is using a 32GB solid state device to cach the most frequently used files on the 32gb device, THIS IS NOT A RAID 0 CONFIGURATION please stop refering to it as such.

do you have a hybrid mech drive with a solid state cache? (see below) i suspect that you do since HP makes no mention of including any sort of solid state cache on the  zbook motherboard.

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-7200RPM-Hybrid-ST750LX003/dp/B00691WMJG

if you do have one of these drives, there is nothing you can do as the drives firmware contains the caching driver

i do however see a zbook 17 base model which has a mSATA slot besides the normal sata bay

32GB Solid State Drive (SSD) - mSATA interface, with Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) - Includes bracket and screws part# 737342-001

note that the 32gb module is a SRT, disk cache module, and does not use a RST driver!! this module is not a SSD it's only function is to cach the most frequently used files of the mech hard drive and does exactly the same thing as the seagate momentus hybrid drive linked to above the only diffrence is that the laptop seems to be able to disable the 32gb cache, which the seagate drive can not do (it's always on)

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/smart-response-technology.html

the 128/256 modules are normal SSD's and can be configured/used as a normal Hard drive

if your laptop does have a physical 32gb module be aware that windows8 and up also have a option to detect 32gb and smaller devices and offer to use them a cache device to speed up windows operations

HP Recommended

Another computer that is identical can be used for comparison.

It has the HP driver successfully downloaded and installed.

The Intel RST can be opened and used.

The performance tab is clicked and it has acceleration displayed.

The acceleration can be disabled.

The drive then can be removed from the computer.

The drive can then be placed into the secondary bay of another computer.

The drive files can then be read, then copy and pasted, and the files are then moved from one computer to the other.

The drive is then removed and returned to the original computer.

The Intel RST is reopened, the performance tab is clicked, acceleration is restarted.

The above steps are what need to be done on the problematic computer.

Once the files are able to be read they can be copied and pasted into the drive of another computer.

The drive can then be sanitized, the operating system, drivers, applications, and files restored.

In summary the steps work on another Zbook 17 G0 or base model.

Help is needed to get the HP driver, Intel RST, to work on this computer.

Were you able to find either ROM or UEFI options to disable Intel RST?

HP Recommended

if the recomedations i made previously did not allow disk access, there is nothing more to try except for perhaps a data recovery program

the recovery program will hopefully able to access the disk in another computer and  if able to do so will bypass the "SRT" driver and look at the disk without trying to access the SSD. you may be able to recover data this way

short of the above, the last recourse is a data recovery service, and if unwilling to spend $200 (or more) then that's it

you will have to simply reformat the drive. As i previously stated there is no easy way to manually remove the SRT driver and the RST driver. (there are hundreds of registry entries) and even if you tried to uninstall, you have no way to confirm if the issue is a OS coruption or a failing drive issue (bad blocks) or a failing 32GB cache module
