Physically that S might fit, but the specifications for the two, below, directly from Intel shows the S is a cooler running processor and putting in a significantly hotter processor such as that non-S may result in burning out the processor, or no boot due to the non-S version not being on the internal microcode white list that HP codes into BIOS. Here's the differences:
Package Specifications for i7-3770S:
65W max TDP
Sockets Supported FCLGA1155
Max CPU Configuration 1
Thermal Solution Specification 2011C
TCASE 69.1°C
Package Size 37.5mm x 37.5mm
Package Specifications for i7-3770:
77W max TDP
Sockets Supported FCLGA1155
Max CPU Configuration 1
Thermal Solution Specification 2011D
TCASE 67.4°C
TJUNCTION 105°C
Package Size 37.5mm x 37.5mm
I vote with Paul..... that Elite 8300 SFF is a nice small workstation he knows well, and I have one too. The USDT is tiny. Buy a dog slow SFF version off eBay for cheap and then put in your excellent processor, and you will have a very nice computer. By the way..... its BIOS needs the step-up technique to get to the latest. An older BIOS update first, and then it can take the newest (just in case you get one off eBay that has the old BIOS).
