Hi all,

I'm planning to build a home server and those Proliant Microservers look great for a decent price. The gen8 has Ivy Bridge processors and LGA1155 socket. I'd like to replace the Celeron chip with one of the Xeon E3 ones. Has anyone any suggestions which one is a good value for money? Thanks pepe

There is a German Hardware Forum (not related to HP) which did alot of testing with the MicroServer and different combinations of CPU's, etc. but they also only list the V2 version of that CPU so I would recommend to either use that or any other they list:

Another website with tested CPU's (not tested by HPE!): http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proliant-microserver-gen8-links/#entry62204

But still better ask in the HPE Forum for a (officially) supported solution.

Hi, pepe:

Did you also post your question on the Proliant Microserver Support Forum on the HPE community?

Hi Paul,

I'm not registered on that forum yet. I was going to pm you but you have it probably disabled. Upgrading a cpu on a server is not exactly a business activity.:)

I'm watching a Xeon E3-1230 for a good price. The socket fits and it's cheaper than the V2 version as I have found a how to for this cpu.:)

Cheers, Pepe

Hi, pepe:

I agree, but when HP split into 2 companies, they kept the servers, switches, tape drives, etc over there.

I'm sure there must be someone on that forum who knows about hardware upgrades to servers.

I keep my PM turned off because I get bombarded with PM's from folks wanting me to help them outside of the general forum.

They must assume because my name sits at the top of the list, that I have all the answers, which of course I don't.

And some of them are downright rude to me when I have answered in the past that I can't help them.

So, I just keep the feature turned off now.

Paul

Thanks rmayer!!

I have done some research and the v2 means Ivy Bridge. V3 is Haswell, etc. Since Sandy Bridge is backward compatible with Ivy Bridge and use the same socket it should probably be fine but I'll stick with the IB chips. I have got two server on eBay already upgraded and watching. Even used server IB processors are a bit expensive so it's better to get it done for cheap. 🙂

Thanks a lot for both of you!!

Cheers, Pepe
