XW8600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have recently acquired an xw8600 workstation with 2 x E5440 (no riser) with 28GB memory.

I plan to max out the memory on this and use as a workstation/desktop. On the product specs page - it says upto 128GB.  But on the support page it says (The 8-GB DIMM is not supported on the system board).

Question 1. Can I use 8gb DIMMs on this board.

Question 2.  What type of memory is compatible?  2Rx4 ? 4Rx4? (Given I try to get the maximum amount of memory - 128gb)

Thanks.

Edit:

Current memory configuration - 28 G

the xw8600 had/has a optional memory riser board kit which has 4 memory riser cards that plug into the memory socket on the motherboard, each card has 4 mem sockets this allows 16 memory modules instead of just the 8  motherboard sockets

and yes, the 8600 does support 8gb FB dimms, the doc you are reading is when the 8gb mem modules were not in production,

https://support.hp.com/hr-en/document/c01318764

the xw8600 uses "FB" dimms, which is not what 99% of other systems use

https://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-Memory-WORKSTATION-ProLiant-PC2-6400/dp/B00C8AFVQI

HP quickspecs (this is not the service manual)

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/690533/Hp-Xw8600.html?page=2#manual

you might want to learn how to use "google", the above two links were from google

the HP xw8600 service manual can also be found with google

one last thing, the xw8600 supports a 1600 mhz front side bus (FSB) it is possible to cover two pins on a xeon 1333 FSB cpu and make it run at 1600 mhz for a cpu overclock i ran my dual core X5460/ 3.16mhz cpu's at 1600 instead of 1333 and they became 3.7mhz cpu's (with no increase to the cpu volyage!!)

note that not every cpu can be overclocked. in general the closer to the top speed cpu model the less chance for a overclock. also a dual core will have a betterchance to overclock vs a quad core

i recomend installing a LSI 9207 card with "IT" firmware to get a bootable SATA 3/6GBPS SSD/HD controller that will accept modern drive partitions over 3TB and disable the onboard LSI-106e controller the Dell Perc H310 is a great card to use with a 8600 as it's custom firmware allows both normal non raid and raid modes 0/1/5/10 at the same time.
