HP Z1 G5 Entry Workstation - M.2 Screw & Spacer size

Hi Everyone

I've looked through the forms and I couldn't find a response so apologies if this has been asked before.

I am wanting to add an additional M.2 SSD NVME drive to my Workstation and I am searching for the correct size M.2 screw and spacer size as it is larger than the regular ones and I cannot for the life of me find an answer.

your not looking that hard then as these screws/screw kits are all over amazon/newegg/ebay/alibaba/bestbuy and hundreds of other sites

google is your friend, search using "m.2 screw kit" as keywords and what do you know amazon is the topmost google link

update: the HP service manual for your model appears to state that it supports both nvme and sata based ssd's

I wish it was that easy... HP seems to have settled on a non-standard (but excellent) approach, using the engineered screw-down device shown in the post  HERE .

If you need one as shown in the post above they are near impossible to find, and are proprietary to HP.  If you happen to have an unused Z Turbo Drive G1 or G2 laying around you can harvest one from that.  Or, search eBay for MS-4365 and get one for about $25.00 USD but make sure the seller knows you must have that part.  Maybe HP uses another more standard solution on their lower end computers?  Use the search bar up near the top for this forum, and search for "M.2 screw"... you will see no success at getting one that matches.  Clearly HP should make these available for purchase. 

I'm pretty sure these would have a metric thread, but the plastic/brass machining won't be available except from HP.  A source of parts I've used over the years is from McMaster-Carr.  Amazing selection... and below is their screw section sub-selected for metric that you could work from if you want to MacGyver something together.  They have tons of washers/spacers/etc in all sizes and shapes and materials too, and a great search engine:

ahaaaa,.........the same screw was/is used in the zturbo cards,  as i recall we simply removed the threaded nut off of the pcb and replaced them with standard M.2 parts if the screw went missing

and SDH is right.......if hp uses a part then that part should be documented

It seems to be a smaller diameter than the standard M.2 screws... but I'm sure McMaster would have the proper metric in their stash.  Nice thing about the ZTD G2 with its aluminum heatsink is that you don't really need that screw.  Just put the stick in properly and close up the top with the heatsink.  The foam thermal pads will hold that card's M.2 stick in place.  No such clamping with the ZTD G1, or some of the other places HP is using this odd sized screw/retainer for their M.2 sticks.  A little tip... don't overtighten these screws.  I bought a used ZTD G2 off eBay and the screw was overtightened and it had almost "galled"... fusing of the metals due to too much force.  Just make it snug.

Come on HP.... throw us a bone.
