HP Z230 400W Power supp.: Nividia GForce 1070?

HP Z230
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi there!

I'm a bit confused ... in this post:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/GEFORCE-GTX-1080-w...

DGroves said, a 1070 should work in a Z230 swith 400W power supply. I Have a Z230 with 400W.

Well, I've ordered a 1070. It comes with a 8-PIN PCIe power connector. In the workstation, there is only a 6-PIN.

NVidia recommends 500W minimum System Power:

Will it work in my Z230?

Shall I bye an adapter cable 6-PIN to 8-PIN?

It's not that hard to look at the recomended video cards HP lists for your model, and then look at the highest perforing card's model (NVIDIA® Quadro® K4200) note the cards wattage  (105 watts) and then compare the 170 cards watts (150)

so you are drawing 40 more watts than what a HP card drawswhich is why i stated it should work

unless your z230 is maxed out with several drives lots of ram and a every pci-e slot filled, your system power draw will be within the limits of the HP supply

and one last time,......nvidia does not build computer systems as such they have to be very consertive with the power recomendations as there are so many diffrent ways to build a system that affect the overall power draw

OEM computer builders Like HP,Dell, Lenovo, Acer "DO" build systems and as such know to the watt what the models they sell draw... as such they are able to state power usage/video card recomendations  that are very close to the actual draw...... this is why a OEM system with a video card will have a smaller power supply sometimes than what nvidia recomends

Sorry for beeing so over-cautious ... and esp-. thanks for your kind answer!

I've checked my system:

The 1TB SanDisk SSD draws in the mW ... max. low W

the 3 TB WD Blue should not draw much more ... beyond 10W

All memory slots populated with 2 x 8 GB and 2 x 4 GB

... and atm only one PCIe-Slot is populated with a NIVIDIA K2000, which will leave the System as soon as the 1070 arrives

The Xeon E3-1225 v3 has a TDP of 84W

So, I think, the complete power draw with the 1070 should be at max. 350W ... it may work!
