HP Z420 wont post with XFX RX580

Hi guys!

Got a little problem: Got my hand on a HP Z420 Workstation and wanted to upgrade it with a XFX RX580, but after installing the card i get no screen and the Z420s powerbutton turns red and it beeps 6 times (error code for graphic card issue).

I used the included 2x6pin to 8pin adapter from XFX. The power led on the card is blue (Power OK as i understand) and fans are spinning.

What i tried:

• Updated to most recent BIOS (did that before installing the GPU)

• Reseated the GPU serveral times

• Both positions on the switch on the GPU

• Tried an second PSU (check if Z420s PSU is too weak, also blue led, same behavior as with internal PSU)

• Tested card in different PC, working fine

• Tested Z420 with different GPU (GF 210), working fine.

• CMOS Reset with GPU installed and without

• Serveral different BIOS Settings, Secureboot is disabled, Legacy is enabled.

Anybody got an idea what else i can try or got the same problem?

do you have the 700 watt supply (which has two 6 pin gpu connections) or the 500 watt unit which has none?

it appears that one or more of the adapters is not making a correct connection, or the 8 connection is not inserted into the video card correctly 

reseat the 6 to 8 pin connections and make sure the 8 pin is actually inserted fully into the video card

when the connections are fully inserted the plastic latch on the connection(s) will fit over the locking ridge on the other connector

Got the PSU with 2x 6pin, but i thinks its 600W, not 700W.

Did already try these steps, no change.

whoops, you are correct the z420 has a optional 600 watt and the z440 has a optional 700 watt (sorry)

has the video card been tested in another system?

There has been a noticeable trend of problems with AMD GPU drivers and VBIOS that vary with the system in which it is installed.  For example:

It appears AMD often issues new drivers  and BIOS in rapid succession after product release. I've never reflashed a GPU BIOS, but that would seem a logical first step, if only to eliminate it as possibility. As with any BIOS, this has to be done very carefully, as recovery from a misflashed BIOS may ruin the card or require it be sent to a service center. If the RX 580 has a dual BIOS switch that will allow for problems. Check AMD for a new driver as well in case there has been an update since downloading last time.

The RX580 is certainly used in z420's. There are 27 HP z420 / RX 580 results in Passmarks baselines. The performance is quite good, similar to a GTX 1060, with the best 3D result = 10121 on an E5-1650 v2 system overclocked to 4.2GHz.

I figured it out!

It seems that on Slot 2 (PCIe3 x16) not all lanes are working correctly, thats also why other cards are working, because all cards if tested with only use a maximum of 8 Lanes.

I managed to get the card running in Slot 3 (PCIe2 x8 Slot), but thats not very optimal. I will try to get my hand on a PCIe Riser and test the card on Slot 5 (PCIe3 x16).

Very wierd... Slot 2 has no physical damage and also proper cleaning of the slot did not help.

There is a possibility that the GPU PCIe Slot 2 is configured incorrectly.  This is worth checking  >

Enter BIOS > Advanced > Slot Settings and set the GPU slot value to the highest "Gen 3" setting.

Slot 1 (top):PCI Express Gen2 x4(1)*Full-height, Full-length

Slot 2: PCI Express Gen3 x 16Full-height, Full-length (with extender)

Slot 3: PCI Express Gen2 x 8(4)* with open-ended connector**Full-height, Full-length (with extender)

Slot 4: PCI Express Gen3 x8 with open-ended connector**Full-height, Full-length (with extender)

There is also some possibility if there is a sufficient number of PCIe lanes used by add-in cards- a RAID controller can use x8, PCIe M.2 can be x4 each such that the GPU will run at x8. Another item to consider and eliminate as a possibility.

Already tried that, no change.

I only want to use 1x PCIe3x16 (prefered slot 2) and PCI (Slot 6), that should not use to much lanes.

As soon as i get a PCIe Riser i will try if the card is working in slot 5.

Newer cards will require UEFI bios, so maybe it's in Legacy mode?  I'd check that.
