HP Z600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Szia!
Jelenleg van egy HP Z600, mint számítógép x5670 CPU 24Gb RAM 2 HDD 1 SSD. Jelenleg Asus GTX 1080 turbót használok.
A tápegység 650
W os. A GTX 1080 180 W-ot fogyaszt.

"Hello!
I currently have an HP Z600 as a computer x5670 CPU 24Gb RAM 2 HDD 1 SSD. I am currently using an Asus GTX 1080 turbo.
The power supply is 650
W os. The GTX 1080 consumes 180 W.
My question would be that the new Nvidia 30xx series has just been released.
Can I use a computer with the new 3070 video card?
According to the data, it consumes 220 watts. 1 pc with 8 pins
Thanks"

Decode 7,
If the NVIDIA RTX 3070 announced yesterday is as powerful as has been said, it will have among the largest proportional increase in performance of NVIDIA graphics cards.  The announcement stated that the RTX 3070 (8GB, 5,888 CUDA cores, 256-bit, $500, ) is faster than the RTX  2080Ti  (11GB, 4,352 CUDA cores, 352-bit), $1,000), but for only half the cost!
Certainly, the RTX 3070 will be very fast.  However, the z600 will not be able to use enough  of the  RTX 3070 performance to make that a good purchase.  Already, the current GTX 1080 is not providing full performance.
 Xeon X5670:

The system memory speed of 1333MHz, but most importantly, the PCIe 2.0 GPU slot instead of PCIe 3.0 means that much of the performance will be wasted.  Important!: The average Passmark Single Thread Mark for the Xeon X5670 is 1,388. The speed of the fastest processor core is extremely important to the 3D performance of the GPU.

If I might recommend; consider:

1. Sell the z600, but keep the GTX 1080.

2. Take the value of the z600 sale and add the $500 cost of the RTX 3070.

3. Use that amount to buy an HP z420 Version 2 or z620 Version 2 with a Xeon E5-1650 v2  (3.5 / 3.9GHz)

4. Buy an HP all-in-one z420 liquid cooler

5. Overclock the Xeon E5-1650 v2 to 4.1GHz on all cores using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) This is very easy!

6. Add RAM to a total of 32GB DDR3-1866.  Use only memory having the HP part number on it.

6. Add a fast 500GB SSD for Windows and programs and a mechanical drive for files

7. Install the GTX 1080

The performance will be far better for a similar total cost. Also, the system will not need upgrading or replacement for a longer period of time.

For example, the office z420:

HP z420_3: (2015) (R11) Xeon E5-1650 v2 (6C@ 4.3GHz) / z420 Liquid cooling / 32GB (HP/Samsung 4X 8GB DDR3-1866 ECC registered) / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/ Samsung 860 EVO 500GB + HGST 4TB  / 600W PSU > Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (HP OEM ) > Samsung 40" 4K

Passmark System Rating = 5644
CPU = 15293
 2D = 847
 3D = 10953
Mem = 2997
Disk = 4858
Single Thread Mark = 2384

This is the highest rated z600 on Passmark of 1,174 tested:

Passmark System Rating: = 4110

CPU = 10835 (2X Xeon X5670)

2D = 549 (RTX 2060)

3D = 7300

Mem = 1822 (12GB)

Disk = 13396 (Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe 500GB)

Notice that the CPU processor score of two Xeon 5670's with 12 cores is still less than a single overclocked E5-1650 v2. Also, the average Passmark 3D score for the RTX 2060 is 14275, whereas in that z600 the score was only 7300.  That is almost twice the relative score. The highest 3D score for any z600 is 9334, using a GTX 1070. The average 3D for GTX 1080 is 13332 whereas the highest 3D score in a z600 is 8315.  The very encouraging news of that result is to see someone using an NVMe M.2 in a z600.

In summary, an RTX 3070 in a z600 will have a disproportionate performance loss.  The upgraded system will also need to be replaced sooner than an upgraded zX20 system. Please consider an alternative strategy to upgrade.

Thank you!!!
I found your answer interesting.
Maybe one day I will buy another machine as well because it is value for money for the best work and play.

May I ask you that the z600 x5670 night can't be overlocked  intel extreme tuning utility (xtu)?
I saw the z800 ason liquid cooling. Isn't that good for the z600? Not compatible?

Decode7,

As far as I know, there are no Xeons made for dual processor use that may overclocked. In Xeon LGA1366, the W-series are single processors and the X-series are dual processors. The W36XX series may be overclocked, but of the 1,174 z600's tested on Passmark, there are none using a W36XX processor. In z400, there are W36Xx series CPU's overlcloked up to 4.3GHz.

Z800 liquid cooling in z600:  Comparing numerous internal photo images of z600, I did not see any that used a z800 liquid cooling system. The 800 liquid cooling system has an externally mounted radiator that is cooled by a pair of internal fans, one fan above the other in exhaust mode. If the z600 case has space for these fans and the external cooling, it may be possible.  However, i think this would require modification to the case.

I hope others will comment if this is incorrect information. Perhaps our Forum friend SDH knows about cooling options in z600.

Consider running the free trial of Passmark Performance Test to compare your system to the other 1,173 z600's tested. The comparison will show which components produce the best performance in each category.

BambiBoomZ,

Not to hijack the thread, but would the 600W PSU in the Z420 have enough power to drive the RTX 3070 when combined with the Xeon E5-1650 v2? I ask as I have a 1070 Ti currently combined with that CPU and it seems to struggle driving both under heavy workloads -- would the 700W power supply from a Z440 potentially work in a Z420 perhaps?

HP Recommended

Kamzeride,

The recommended power supply for the RTX 3070 is 650W, whereas the z420 has a 600W power supply.  While there are not yet any reviews and tests of the RTX3070, in my view, using it is high risk.  HP power supplies are somewhat conservatively rated- the GPU 6-pin connectors and probably the PCIe slots will deliver more than specified.  Also, the total power requirements of the system- the CPU requirement and total load of components, plus most importantly, the use mean that use in the z420 is possible but, in my view, too close to the edge of usability.  If there is ever a chance the system is used ,for example hybrid ray-tracing rendering that runs the CPU and GPU at 100% sustained loads, that appears to be high risk.

That said, reviewing the z420 and z440 chassis side by side:

HP z420 and z440 chassis.jpg

> suggest that they are extremely similar if not identical internally.  Even small components on the motherboard appear to have the identical placement as is the cable configuration. As the Xeon E5-16XX v2, v3, and v4 are LGA2011 with similar power requirements, the z440 may well work.

I hope that others here will comment, perhaps our Forum friend SDH who has a much wider generational experience with HP than I.  SDH brought our attention to the superior CPU cooling of the z440 and the manner in which that may be adapted to earlier generations.

I would suggest being patient before ordering; wait a bit for a good number of in-depth reviews including workstation uses, plus some product sorting time, although NVIDIA does appear to have their drivers organized early on.

It's probable quite a number of z420 and other obsolete z-series generations users will be interested in the RTX 3070. My next GPU is likely to be the successor to the Quadro RTX 4000 so as to have 4K,10-bit color, but "better than RTX 2080 Ti performance" for only $500 is extremely tempting. But, in which parameters is it also true?

If the pattern of RTX to Quadro basis holds, the RTX 4000- which is  related to the RTX 2070, may mean the Ampere Quadro RTX 8GB will be similar to the RTX 3070.

OS: There will be some good bargains on used RTX: I noticed that yesterday, Sept. 4, there were dozens of RTX 20XX series GPU's removed from Ebahh sales- "lost or no longer available" and a couple were sold for near $500 as bidding collapsed.  I see that GTX 1080 Ti's are selling in the low $400's- also tempting. z420_3 might have a blower version one of those instead of inheriting the z620_2 GTX 1070 Ti (MSI Aero).
