Kenny_wong,

I don't see a potential problem per se in using a Firepro W8100 GPU in a z820.

But, I can find an example of that exact use.

It is suprising that in the (I think) 800,000 baseline listings of Passmark Performance Test results, there is only one listing for the W8100, that in a Dell Precision T7910 (2X Xeon E5-2698 v4).  As the T7910 is more or less the Dell equivalent of the z840, and the configuration and power supply size are similar, it seems it should work.

However, the W8100 is an older deisgn and newer cards have a better cost/perofrmnace ratio.

If you do not already have the W8100- and even if you do- consider the Quadro P2000 (5GB) ($427). I replaced the Quadro K4200 (4GB) in the office z420 (E5-1660 v2) and the Passmark 3D score changed from 4763 to 9030.  The 3D Mark for the one Passmark listing for the W8100 ($920) is 8219, so the P2000 is producing a considerably higher rating for less than half the cost.  If you need the 8GB VRAM, consider the Quadro P4000 (8GB) at $860- still at lower cost than the W8100, and the top 3D score on Passmark (52 tested) for the P4000 is 14290.6 -the average GTX 1080 Ti scores 13393.  Both the P2000 and P4000 are available in a new z840, so HP apprently approves. The new Pascal Quadros series are really impressive for the cost.

If you do use a Pascal Quadro in the z820, be sure to have the latest BIOS.

May I enquire as to your use?

Cheers,
