Z840
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Although this thread went dormant some time back, no one ever posted a solution. The only conclusion I could come to is that the documented configuration is WRONG!

As I had this same problem, with my "Refurbished" Z840 with 128Gb of RAM, I discovered a solution (trial and error until it booted) and just wanted to share it with others who might be experiencing this same problem. Here's how I solved the problem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_wf9sDUrTo at approximately 1:24 in. Note: this configuration is for 8 16gb Simms in a DUAL CPU set up. THE FIX is to place 2 sticks at the furthest slots on either side of each CPU. By slot number  this would mean utilizing slots 1,2 3,4 9.10 11.12 (See Youtube video in link above at 1:24 in and ignore their example, the HP suggested slots 5,6,7 and 8 do not work!)
